A revised version of this preprint is now posted on arXiv. The theory section is rewritten, improving model exposition based on feedback we received, we fixed some confusion and errors, contextualized the models more carefully so the interpretation becomes clearer, and improved the overall writing.

The Difference Between "Replicable" and "Not Replicable" Is Not Itself Scientifically Replicable
Replication studies estimate the replicability rate of scientific results by aggregating binary verdicts of experiments as ``replicated'' and ``not replicated''. These estimates assume rarely attainab...

Two expectations can be formed in the standard rule-learning paradigm. 1) Structure: eg. ABB 2) Each subsequent token is NEW in the learning phase At test expectation (2) is always violated. The VoE effect is not additive. so violating (1) AND (2) or only (2) should lead to similar looking times.

so many correlational social science studies with causal implications based on scale measures immediately stop making sense when you try and interpret the relationship between two individual items. it's rather a good measure of face validity tbh. there are oceans of meaning btw items and constructs.

Do non-human primates have theory of mind? My new paper takes a new computational approach to this classic question. We implemented verbal theories of primates' mental representations as computational models. These models completed classic visual perspective-taking tasks.

Jara-Ettinger & Dunham proposed that we possess a specialized ability to represent institutional roles doi.org/10.1017/S014... I argue, we may not. Understanding institutional roles can develop from infants’ ability to interpret goal-directed and communicative actions doi.org/10.1017/S014...

Rule learning could not be replicated in a multi-lab setup: doi.org/10.1111/desc... As McMillan et al. (2026) note: “scale alone cannot resolve the challenges we have encountered.” Indeed. Let’s talk about procedures and stimuli, the constructs we actually measure, and how well we measure them.

New paper, co-authored with Justin Wood, in @cp-trendscognsci.bsky.social: The Nativist-Empiricist Debate Is Broken We argue that radical nativism and radical empiricism are compatible and, in some cases, both plausibly true. So something is wrong. 🧵 Author share link here, valid til Oct 31:

Another month, another Eastern European country. The Summer School of Linguistics is excellent for learning about language, and Czechia is just a beautiful place to ride. Thanks for the invitation!

The Rijeka Cognitive Sciences Symposium was great! Good to see how quickly the field is developing in Eastern Europe. Thank you for inviting me (and for giving me an excuse to take the scenic route🤘)

What matters most for childhood brain organization? We analyzed 649 variables. The answer: Socioeconomics (SES); with brain patterns pointing at sleep & stress as drivers. Even brain-IQ associations were better explained by SES. In Science today: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

One-year-olds watching cartoon characters help each other don’t necessarily expect a helper to also help new characters, suggesting that infants assume prosocial behavior is based on relationships rather than innate dispositions. In PNAS: ow.ly/6bTH50YPGUo
