Since it was inaugurated in 2016, the Medal of Courage has seen a range of recipients, from Yeshe Choedon to communities defending their land against mega-development in Dege County. Every recipient, including this year's recipient, Dr Gyal Lo, have taken a bold stand for Tibet.

On 2 July, Lobga Rangzen self-immolated in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York, calling for the freedom and independence of Tibet. His final words to us were not of grief but of resolution: to continue the struggle he gave everything for.

171 Tibetans have now self-immolated in protest against China's repression of Tibet. Lobga Rangzen's death outside the UN Headquarters was a call to action. In his final message, he urged Tibetans living in freedom to use their voices for those inside Tibet who cannot.

Breaking: UN High commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, raised concerns about China’s Ethnic Unity Law, calling for a repeal in his statement at the ongoing Human Rights Council session on 15 June. This is a massive victory for Tibet and ally campaigners but the work is far from done.
