...there's more and arguably better cheesecake in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, compared with the first movie, but it's almost as if someone noticed the script was worse and said, "Fixing it sounds hard -- how about more panty shots instead?"

It's not an egregious failure, just a muted, disappointing thing. With McG fully lost in the CGI sauce, it's weightless and ungrounded. With Bill Murray absent, we're forced to live with his one-note replacement. The villain makes more sense, but she's not really much fun. It's all a step down...

The first Charlie's Angels movie was EXACTLY stupid and artificial enough. This sequel is notably stupider and artificaler... I wanted the pretty girls to distract me from failings in quality, craft, and inspiration, but cheeky energy and pretty faces can only get us so far. This retread fell short.

All that said, my 0 stars might be unfair. My gamer neighbor spent the ENTIRE movie yelling loudly, verbally abusing other gamers, making it impossible to enjoy anything in my apartment. He could've ruined actual sex with Salma Hayek if she'd somehow magically appeared on my bed. My neighbors SUCK.😑

Two other similar '90s films, retropunk The Avengers and literally retro The Mask of Zorro nail both adventure and comedy vastly more consistently and with greater intelligence than Wild Wild West. In comparison, the latter significantly pales.

Wild Wild West is a good adventure film, almost great at times, but it's a notably bad comedy, with unforgivably awful comic dialogue and brain-meltingly stupid punchlines. The good and bad collide and annihilate like matter vs. anti-matter.

Will Smith, Kevin Kline, SALMA HAYEK, and a scenery-obliterating Kenneth Branagh are a HELL of a cast. The costumes, sets, and overall design work are legitimately stunning. The script is like a dog shitting on dog vomit and then asking for applause and more ticket sales. Writing matters, folks.🫠

I'd been dragging my feet on this rewatch for a while. I didn't recall Pocahontas being anywhere close to this great. I got chills like 14 times watching it tonight. The duality of opposing sides readying for battle coming from the same misguided place was... fucking ART. That song is incredible.

A big part of why I fell in love. Many big repair bills aside, she's been a (deeply impractical) joy. As for conversations about her with mostly middle-aged dudes (and a few chicks, man), they're mostly pleasant, but sometimes people say, "I had the sedan." ...which is a COMPLETELY different car.😑

The brilliant cast of 10 Things I Hate About You elevates a slightly weak Shakespeare remix script... but I really need the villain to be a better actor than Andrew Keegan, a GLARING weak link in this. He mutes the energy of the film in the same way Thomas Ian Nicholas subtracts from American Pie.

Blaire is one of my favorite characters in TV history. I thought she was going to only be a scolding bore, but they gave her layers, fire, heart, and an amusing pothead bent -- and Giorgia Whigham brings her to life with such endless intelligence and charm. Two seasons of her is NOT enough.
