1/4- Step into a Victorian pharmacy with these charmingly rosy relics: our pink ceramic apothecary jars! 🌸 Back in the 19th century, these beauties held everything from herbs to mysterious compounds—adding a touch of elegance to medicinal must-haves. #HerbGarret #VictorianPharmacy #PharmHist

On the shelf, it would look like an ordinary book, but when opened you’d find drawers to hide poison. The inside cover has a woodcut from Vesalius’ De Fabrica. The glass bottle says STATUT UM EST HOMINIBUS SEMEI MOR - it is well established that all people die once. It was made in Germany in 1682
A hollow book containing drawers with the names of poisons on, and a glass bottle. The inside cover has an image of a skeleton leaning on a gravedigger’s spade.

Oldest-surviving anatomical theatre, located in Padua and built in 1594. Over the entrance is the Latin inscription: “hic est locus ubi mors gaudet succurrere vitam.” Roughly: “this is the place where death delights to help life (or the living).” Photo: Rolando Paolo Guerzoni. #histmed #skystorians
A photo showing the operating theatre with wooden handrails encircling each riser. In the middle is a wooden table where the dissections would take place.

In 1402, King David II of Solomonic Ethiopia sent an ambassadorial gift of 4 live leopards from the Horn of Africa to the Republic of Venice. The Venetians were pleased, but also slightly panicked, when confronted with the reality of transporting the animals around in Italy.
