This reminds me of the david graeber quote about the seemingly "peaceful" cultures that existed in states of intense spiritual warfare

I was going to post "RIP R Crumb, you would have loved lady powerlifting instagram" but thankfully he's still alive.

My ADHD brain is now spinning up a mid 1600s setting where you're fighting this fuckin guy, like a literal kaiju manifestation of the divine right of kings, with Leonardo Da Vinci-esque giant mechs.
Frontispiece from Hobbes' LEVIATHAN, the 1600s book of political theory arguing for stern governance as an alternative to a state of nature consisting of "the warre of all against all" that leads to life being "nasty, brutish, and short." The titular Leviathan is a giant dude in a crown with a sword, made up of a horde of smaller dudes, looming over the land.

Or back to Machiavelli. After the fall of the republic of Florence, our fellow Nic was arrested, tortured, and exiled to the countryside. That's the context where he wrote "The Prince." His famous letter to Vettori is held up for a lot of things, but i adore this passage on reading the ancients:

I used to glaze over the middle part of the Declaration of Independence, but it's extremely relevant given the pretensions to tyranny we have going right now.

There is a severe temptation towards, in the words of @jonathansmucker.bsky.social, the story of "the righteous few" where our distaste for injustice perpetrated within society leads us to want to establish a smaller Elect of awakened ones.

Plenty of lanes to find depending on your interests. For example, Gays and Theys? Give yourself a Walt Whitman phase. Walt, the grand bearded daddy of American poetic imagination, volunteered in the hospitals as a kind and empathetic presence. See others fully in their pain, and tend to them!
Whitman's "The Wound-Dresser:"
Thus in silence, in dream's projections,
Returning, resuming, I thread my way through the hospitals;

The hurt and the wounded I pacify with soothing hand,
I sit by the restless all the dark night — some are so young;
Some suffer so much — I recall the experience sweet and sad;
(Many a soldier's loving arms about this neck have cross'd and rested,
Many a soldier's kiss dwells on these bearded lips.)Cover of "Drum Taps," Whitman's 1865 volume of poems about the civil war.

Seems like a shitpost but isn't: i feel like there's a lane worth exploring in terms of Jim Channon's concepts of the First Earth Battalion. A military ethos that is tuned into not just the nation state, but this superorganism we call a planet.
"The president needs a wider range of options to respond to the 1980s. Force as a concept has lost most of its legitimacy."Slightly fantastical diagram of describing the connections between "earth battalions," "action brigades," "devotional divisions," and "conscience corps."

and that's partly why I'm suggesting that revolt of the caring classes is a better text to think from. "most work isn’t making anything, it’s cleaning and polishing, and watching and tending to, helping and nurturing and fixing and otherwise taking care of things."

I think I'm in agreement that maintaining and caring for things is real and meaningful labor. Where I'm pointing out the frustration of the duct-taper is more like being set up in a position where it's really pointless and unnecessary.

If you see this, repost with models of positive masculinity. (Apparently my positive models are all named Bruce.)

@bombsfall.bsky.social I got on an Art Young kick last night thanks to your old thread on Henry Dubb and the Poor Fish on the bad site. There are SO many bangers in the archives of Good Morning.
A satirical cartoon from 1919 featuring a caricature of a high society woman, Mrs Best-People. In the first panel, subtitled "one year ago" she is stabbing an image of a pacifist war resister, shouting "Coward! Sissy!" On the ground a newspaper reads "Pacifists are fools; force the only weapon"

In the second panel, subtitled "And Today" she is clutching a handkerchief and crying "isn't it terrible to think of workmen using force?" On the ground a newspaper reads "Nothing to be gained in using force; warning to labor."

Classic mistake. You've got inside leverage and a height advantage on the rent-a-cop, so what you want to do is the classic swim move. Take a couple hard steps, grab his outside arm, and swing your inside arm over his head. It does require good footwork and leave you open for a second, though.
