I’m no seer, but some long-term tangents always seemed pretty obvious. I wrote these passages for a work of fiction almost 45 years ago…

America had gone through the nauseating convulsions of a national election, and the self-renewing processes of democracy produced yet another soon to be scapegoat for everything that was not right in the land. A former producer of television shows, the new President knew how to cater to the people’s need for variety in their lives. Spicing his campaign speeches with bizarre paradoxes and half-truths such as
"Hard work in this country is nowadays subject more to punishment than reward," "Americans have become too inward-looking to find meaning in that lives," and "Efforts to change the nation's ills have only perpetuated them," he managed to so mystify the populace that he became a viable alternative to the incumbent's straightforwardness and reserved promises. The election's outcome was never in doubt.

It was more likely that the missionaries were phenomena attributable to the president's landslide election. Despite his years controlling the decidedly rancid content of network television, he claimed to be lately guided by deep religious principles, and it was only natural that the nation, enchanted by the promise of another fresh start, followed the fashion. His victory had emboldened the zealots, had encouraged many to believe it was no less than a mandate from the Almighty to go forth and proclaim the good word unto the land and all its inhabitants. Most of those who stopped at Karen's threshold did not mention abortion directly, but the theme they all shared did not vary: the country's libertine ways would lead to eternal damnation.
