when you think about "reach" and "visibility" online, remember that 98% of Meta's revenue (threads, instagram, facebook) comes from advertising. Those Meta ads may bring more eyes and ears, and also may show you've got money to spend

Regardless of whether UMG decides to sell itself, remember that the "big" music industry has always been about maximizing profits. Not for the musicians, but for the executives. with so much new music created every day, do you believe that mainstream music can only circulate the same few artists?

dubstep brought stuttery bass/melodies to a lot of folks but it never really did much for me. i think it feels too artificial. which is rich considering i use synths and samples 🤣

my daughter continues to love her sandbox "tycoon" games, and it's still amazing how I think she has better WASD control than I've ever had

back well before suno, i tried out a couple "ai plugins" for making sounds and such for music. almost immediately, I was frustrated with how limited the actual control was. like, if I add reverb, I want to manage it! ended up not being a good tool in the end, for me.

sometimes songs are simply bad. even a great performance can't rescue them. this is how I feel about "happy birthday"

000

Thousand Gardens @thousandgardens.bsky.social · 05/04/2026

sometimes my songs come together really fast, like a day or two. other times, I can hear something i like and it may take months before i want to "do the rest." both are valid!

If you can't spend more than a minute making a cover, what does that say about the effort you put into your music?

000

Thousand Gardens @thousandgardens.bsky.social · 04/04/2026

One thing I tell folks who are curious about using AI to make a part of their work is that AI isn't a secret. Not only can people recognize it, but they know it's low effort. Associating yourself with low effort stuff makes the rest of your work also feel low effort.

"Coastlines" is now available for streaming everywhere. Spotify, Youtube, Apple, and the rest. Combining inspiration from vintage electronic artists like Boards of Canada, Mouse on Mars, plus modern artists like Black Moth Super Rainbow, Fourtet, etc, I hope you enjoy this downtempo-tinged album.

For those of you who follow me, thank you. My third album, Coastlines, is available on Bandcamp now and should be available to stream in your local area when you wake up. It has been a joy to create this work, and I have been enjoying it regularly since it wrapped up. 👇

Falling Leaves, the last single before the album drops next week, is out today. A slower, melodic song that plays between different instruments as it goes. Enjoy! song.link/us/i/1817354...

I don't only make sad songs, i also make upbeat or even danceable songs. "Time's Up" has flavors of deep and disco house, and I'm glad I was able to pay homage while still bringing something fresh. It's streaming everywhere early; here's one link:

"Bread and Circus" started up during a night I was baking, and as the song grew, the idea of how much we are losing today while so many simply plow ahead struck me as so sad. You can listen early here:

"Saskatchewan" is a short, dynamic song, clearly in the style of Boards of Canada and one thing I always have liked about BoC is that there is an underlying menace in so many of their songs. Not violence, but an unknowable thing. Anyway you can listen early, here:

Honestly so happy that at the halfway point, the Kickstarter for CD & vinyl of Coastlines is 25% funded. It's not much, but knowing there are people out there who are interested in having actual physical copies of my music in their home is so fulfilling. If you're interested, link in the comments:

Unsurprisingly, I've yet to hear any AI music that surprises me. It's all so far just lesser copies of existing style with the "it factor" stripped out. Style-less.

I remember it was a big deal for hidden tracks to be even more secret than usual and you had to check at the first track by trying to rewind it, since some were before the first song. The internet was barely there, so we were all just goofin on this as best we could figure out

000

Thousand Gardens @thousandgardens.bsky.social · 07/05/2025

On physical media, an album could sneak a secret in (locked groove, an extra bit of weird sound, incidental music, or eventually a full track). They were good secrets, and not on liner notes. Listen all the way through, and then it continues after a period of silence.
