Seriously. And even if they would… do we really want to live in a system in which things only work when its biggest beneficiaries (who mistakenly think themselves its benefactors) are appeased? We spent the better part of human history trying to shed those systems.

The dudes driving trucks to jobsites listening to talk radio or some Daily Wire show, all spitting mad about Blue cities and pretending to carry the economy, are being indirectly carried by them. Blue city money goes to their state’s economy and that’s why Big Dan’s construction gets work.

For real. Most of us are just living our lives waiting for the nonsense to blow over while weirdos insist it’s indispensable.

For some reason businesses seem to lose all their “competing by offering more and better” power whenever the government talks about doing something that isn’t getting done or is being done poorly by those companies.

The people pleading Bear’s innocence would say he got his just desserts if he’d wished for Ian to fall in love with him. The people upset over Lupita as Helen would forget about historical accuracy if Sydney Sweeney were cast in the role of a woman from Bronze-Age Anatolia Don’t let them fool you.

They refuse to understand that you can’t apply demand-side economy solutions to the problems caused by a supply-side economy that sets the parameters for its own demands.

Coupled with the way that its premise is treated in-universe as new and revolutionary (rather than a warming-over of the mercantile sensibilities that had already existed for more than 300 years before its time) Rand charted courses where even the haziest grasp of reason fears to tread. [end]

thoughtsmcwrangle.bsky.social @thoughtsmcwrangle.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
I argue that while the technological implications in Rand’s work are fairly lackluster, the deluded obliviousness with which Hank et al. disregard that they are copiously rewarded for their own efforts and also reap the rewards of others both past and present is truly visionary 8/9

V) In order to get where he was, Rearden had to out-compete/undercut others who were presumably content to participate without the weird megalomaniacal anxieties that afflicted him. So it’s curious to treat this as a lothesome burden no one will share when many were already gladly doing so 7/9

IV) This wealth is enough that they get bored of having vast amounts of money with which to purchase goods and services (the intended function of currency and commerce) but to exert political influence and project soft power of geopolitics despite the much-bemoaned constraint of “small minds” 6/9

thoughtsmcwrangle.bsky.social @thoughtsmcwrangle.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
III) Hank and his like-minded collaborators operate under the worldview that their efforts are largely unappreciated by society despite being rewarded with vast sums of money—enough to self-segregate from society while still maintaining an operating foothold within it to extract further wealth 5/9

II) Hank’s fortune (and that of the other similarly put-upon “Prime Movers”) hinges on the efforts of employees who didn’t get raptured to Billionaire-Wank island. Not to mention supply chains outside of his own company, transportation infrastructure, etc. This is all hand-waved, of course 4/9

I) Hank benefits from teams of scientists & materials engineers who make his fortune possible. While it’s more or less implied that these engineers are well taken care of, the novel’s thesis posits that this is gratitude doled out at Rearden’s whim rather than a responsible obligation to them 3/9

In Atlas Shrugged, Hank Rearden establishes a secret hideaway for the world’s (largely self-proclaimed) high achievers. They’re all fed up with toiling for the exclusive sake of other people who just leech ungratefully off of them and never to their own benefit. Despite evidence to the contrary 2/9

thoughtsmcwrangle.bsky.social @thoughtsmcwrangle.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Some people have alleged that Atlas Shrugged is not a work of science fiction, citing a lack of truly speculative imagination. I disagree, and will lay my case out thusly 1/9

Found in an old box: books I once read with rapt attention. Later, I would realize it was all in service of galvanizing religious jingoism. However, the books are just high enough to prop my TV up to ideal viewing height Possibly the one positive contribution of Tim LaHaye’s spurious, damaging work
Copies of two books from the Left Behind series by apocalyptic preacher Tim LaHaye and his collaborator Jerry Jenkins. The books in question are Glorious Appearing and Armageddon.

I’ll admit it: I’m jealous of AI. While we workers are surveilled and prodded for maximum efficiency and productivity in an ever-more-precarious economy, the AI tools screw up constantly and we’re told “they’re learning, they’ll improve over time!” Why not give *people* space to grow like that?

There’s the double edged-sword—that you care is a sign you’re doing it right. But it sucks that the collection of instincts that once guarded us against bears & wolves also makes negativity louder. I’m sure that hearing “you’re awesome” doesn’t really help. Even so, you’re awesome & appreciated :)

It’s not about conceding a point, though that can sometimes be warranted in such analysis. Nor is it about disavowing something once cherished; though that can be as well. But appreciation with flaws honestly accounted-for is, to me, far more rewarding than unexamined adoration ever could be (4/4)

Something that provokes strong feelings of like and dislike which one can feel are rather deeply ingrained—natural even—and for which each side often ascribes disingenuous or insufficiently-reasoned motives to those opposed, with wildly varying degrees of accuracy. (3/4)

Not because they’re “right, actually” (blah blah taste, subjectivity, etc.) but rather, it facilitates a reckoning with how I engage with my own dislikes. It’s not unique to media, of course. But I posit that the visual language of something like anime is akin to say, Cilantro. (2/4)

As a total sucker for the anime/manga/JRPG aesthetic, I’ve found that trying to view it from the perspective of someone who finds said art style completely alien, if not repulsive, to be an interesting thought experiment. (1/4)

Remember when they called a bunch of cattle ranchers “patriots” after they had seized government property and started a shootout with authorities over grazing fees? Some of them really dined out on grief when one of the ones who shot at officers was killed after shooting at the officers too.

One of my favorite turns of phrase was in the analysis for Little Goody Two Shoes, about how this world could be so beautiful, but that beauty often gets muddled in the strife of surviving. Paraphrasing of course, because I’m at work; the actual quote more eloquently put. And it rings so true.

I was reminiscing with my daughter about this book the other day. We thought it was going to be a cute little dog story. And while it is full of warm, tender moments, it absolutely tugs on every tear your lacrimal glands can produce by the end. That said, it was an edifying sadness, I think.
