Can you create custom skills in Gemini Notebook before Google’s skills update reaches your account? I'll test a note-based workaround and find one method that works a bit better inside the Gemini app. Google has announced more than 100 software skills for upgraded Gemini Notebooks. That announcement does not explain whether users can create and install their own skills, so I built two simple tests to see what currently happens. You’ll see how to: - Structure skill instructions with YAML front matter - Store skill-like instructions inside a Gemini Notebook note - Invoke a note using an @ mention - Test whether Notebook follows the instructions - Identify when Notebook reads the skill instead of executing it - Check whether a skill works across different notebooks - Connect a Gemini Notebook to the Gemini app - Call the same skill through Gemini - Compare the Notebook and Gemini results The note-based approach was inconsistent inside Gemini Notebook and remained limited to the notebook containing the instructions. Connecting that notebook to Gemini produced better results with my two tests. Keep in mind that this is an experimental workaround, not an officially supported custom-skill system. I'll show you how to create, install, and test a skill through a normal conversation with ChatGPT's Skill Creator. The example creates a Coding Practice Coach that generates short challenges in Python, Rust, or TypeScript and reviews the submitted solution.
