For a river must flow. If we become lakes, we decay and cause others to decay as well. What good are two deaths? Let the river flow, don't let the river grieve twice. Be strong like water.

But the river doesn't give up. More loss makes us realise that losing someone is a part of life. Part of the flow of life. And while we grieve, we are destined to the flow of the river.

She sees us trapped in this dynamic because even all this pain is better than losing someone forever. She sees us die painfully and slowly. She tries to send others along the way to help us. The shadow keeps taking us. They now belong to the river. The river becomes the lake.

Grief is something we carry. We become a shadow to it. The river is the flow of life. She must bear both the life and loss. She tries her best and at great expense to her, gives us what we want to ease our pain. She sees us carry this ghost with us. She sees us destroy ourselves and lose people.

they also showed me their tattoo where they had one tree from their ancestors on one arm and a gum tree leaf on the other as her new home place

i met an amazing nature clinical psychologist and learnt about how somantic therapy and working with nature go hand in hand. also i loved how she approached life, learning something new, try different things. she's a psych, a musician before, and is now thinking of starting a new music project!

i watched 'the return' today by ala’a al qaisi. the picture of lost daughters returning from the clouds to help their father grieve is so brutal. all my issues seem so small compared to the suffering in this world. i drank the shalab and enjoyed it. it then destroyed me when it appears in the story

does anyone use music/albums to feel like you have moved seasons? for me, listening to toe, specifically 'the book about my idle plot on a vague anxiety' back to front multiple times whilst smelling the wattle blooms to let my body know we are indeed in spring

i wish there was a way for me to shout to this whole city of sydney that there is so much love and care that people put towards smaller, grassroots projects, labels, screenings, gigs, events, workshops aaaaa. i have so much respect for all these folks who share this joy with us all.

aaaa lacuna (griffin theatre) was perfect!!! I remember being so mesmerised by the lighting and how visceral the production felt. Such an impressive balance of playfulness, heart, introspection, and learning how to repair our bonds with parents.

reading train dreams by denis johnson felt like being hurt and caressed at the same moment the caress came from the prose making me feel like a benevolent tree existing simply to provide the hurt came from the striking reminder of the pain of existence, to be forgotten, and to love and to have lost.

The Jungle and the Sea absolutely ruined me. I don't know what but I just felt _so much_ for the suffering, the history, the victims of war, and the entire family. I think it's because we can all see parts of that family in our own. I don't know if I will ever see something so moving ever again.

one of my favourite memories this year is sitting by near my council town hall, reading _things in nature merely grow_, and suddenly without warning, finding myself in the middle of a traditional chinese music and dance show outside. I smiled at the simple beauty of it

i finally had the courage to initiate a standing ovation after seeing a play and it came from a genuine place of me just bursting with admiration no more standing ovation hesitancy from now on!

i love love loved _first do no harm_ by grace malouf (kxt). i have not been that drawn into something and been able to peel back as many layers as much as this play. so many thoughts on autonomy, ethics, body dysmorphia+dysphoria, and a bit of toxic masculinity.

I booted up an old phone (circa 2022) and seeing all my old files, apps, notifications gave me such a visceral reaction to the sense of time. Like I saw my old self but was also transported to exactly what I was going through at that time in an instant.

decision point for the week: fill consciousness with so much art and activity and chasing fomo so that there is no room for processing or swallow the tough pill and sit with it all? I am too good at the former :(

i love lucinda wiliams so much www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbOr... like, how can two lines make me feel so sad and so happy at the same time? > Well I can't stay round cause I'm going back south > But all I regret now is I never kissed your mouth

Being able to see a midweek play at a local theatre, partly to escape the weekly dread, and partly to reconnect and feel, is something I feel really grateful for. Continuity at New Theatre was really inventive in the way it got me to think about climate grief and artistic integrity.

Improvised music and seeing musicians show their inner child during performances has to be one of the biggest sources of joy for me. I was smiling throughout the entire Uncomfortable Science set at Church Street Studios yesterday <3

Days and Nights in the Forest (1970) was probably one of the most beautiful ways to peer into of abyss of how we can stray from the essence of life and experience in modern times. This seems to have torn my sense of self apart a bit. How much do we perform vs how much do we live when in the forest?

All That's Left of You (2025) was a deeply human film about displacement, trauma, atrocity, war, and how it reverberates within humankind itself. Feeling the pain of an extinguishing human spirit is one of the hardest things to hold. I'm tearing up just thinking about this film again.

As I get older, I am more drawn to learn about grief and death. I feel like when we hit our 30s, we should all be made to take a compulsory course on grief. We should all have the tools to be able to embrace death with open arms as we (and the people around us) get older.

saw drive your plow over the bones of the dead at belvoir today! stunning prose, with the theme of humanity's role in protecting nature really close to my heart. i think what struck me the most was the background melancholy of existence contrasted with the idea of nature healing this pain.

the kids with bikes have figured out how to sneak into a piece of flat concrete land with some cool hilly bits that's been unoccupied for ages on my street - this made me smile so much. children's ingenuity continues to be marvelling.

A Transgender Woman on the Internet, Crying at the Old Fitz Theatre was a very visceral exploration of the trans and queer experience, the wounds it opens up for all, and how being together and supporting one another is the best way to heal.

portrait of a lady on fire (2019) was such beautiful cinema. the yearning, myth, art, and mysticism made me feel so mesmerised. All I could do at the ending was smile and be in awe.

offside (2006) - how can a film that starts with so much anxiety lead to the most joyous display of humanity and hope for equality even under oppression? i feel really moved

yi yi (2000) is the closest i have felt peering into a new life story as if i was there; it was a beautiful tale of how unfair/painful life can feel and paradoxically is what makes it worth living.

Blackbird by Her Productions at KXT was a gripping and challenging play to watch. Whilst the subject matter was quite heavy, it was a rare production that makes you confront predatory, manipulative behaviour and the various cycles of abuse. www.herproductions.com.au/blackbird-2025

sometimes I pass by these two people on my nightly runs that warms my heart so much: a granddaughter and her vision impaired grandfather, locked arms, assisting him with park walks, with the granddaughter talking, keeping him company.

To the young person who was learning to mosh and putting themselves out there at the doris gig at the chippo last week - just want to say I see you and you were doing great <3. You disappeared after fear of horses so didn't get to say hi :( keep moshing, friend!

saw the sweetest family in front me of at a gig last night - they all sang, danced, and most lovingly, felt the songs that were being played. seeing things like this at gigs makes it all worth it.

There's a flowering eucalypt near me that is feasted on by lorikeets (musk and rainbow) during the day and then by the loveliest, chirpiest, flying foxes at night. It's the cutest. Thank you, tree.

A melancholy realisation as you get older is you see the growing possibility of experience that's out there that you will never have because you are on a different path. But this is also the gift of being human because it makes us learn about the limit of our own existence.

I think the only way the world gets better is if newer generations can form those connections and skills that millenials had the perfect balance of. It's almost like a duty I think unless we want to the world to crumble.

As we grow more disconnected, online, and fragmented I've been thinking more about how to give some of the offline skills we just take for granted to the newer generations. For example, bushwalking 101, attending gigs 101, or doing everything I can to stop taking and give what I love to others.

‘a perfect day to be alone’ by nanae aoyama was super lovely to read. it's a very gentle exploration on coming of age whilst being lonely and choosing to make your own way with what and who you have around you.

I managed to fit in 3 gigs, a trail run, and a photo walk with a friend all whilst in Naarm. A different city, solo living, and trying to make the most of the time in a place is very life affirming and I hope everyone gets to experience moments like that this year.

All We Imagine as Light was absolutely beautiful. Such a elegant film exploring three characters and their place in their adopted city and society around them. If you like slice of life I would highly recommend this film.

I wish people would understand how much exploitation actually occurs in Sydney (and Australia) for many new visitors, residents, and students. Visa scams, fake shell companies for sponsorship, employers exploiting the desperation of others for cheap off the books labour.

usually not a fan of life advice reels but one caught my attention with this content for a life that's "better" 1) misogi: 1 year defining thing each year e.g marathon 2) do something you normally wouldn't do every few months 3) add one positive habit every quarter neat!

Just watched black dog (2024) a few days ago. Hauntingly beautiful. It's one of those movies that you just go with the flow with and take in the cinematography, the emotion, and the setting. Something about a decrepit zoo just makes me tear up, too.

Just lament over how many younger folks will never get to experience the joy of film by being driven away from the price. Again, this was always the case and deals can still be had now but it's just crazy with how the prices are going.

With commodification, resellers are buying cameras from any place and selling them at crazy prices. The average point and shoot is like $150 now when I know they could be had for less than $50 a few years ago. This seems wrong. Yes yes, market prices etc. But now, the bar to entry is so high
