Because within a few hours, the sun will be actively trying to kill me, yes.
A young Tina Turner, wearing a silver top with shoulder pads that could kill a man six blocks away, stands at the centre of a half-spherical steel structure. On the outside of the structure are many grubby men.

I have now had two separate friends (who do not know each other) send me this and I'm starting to worry.
A taxidermy stripper squirrel dances on... I dunno, is that a pencil? Who knows. Looks like a ram's skull in the background. Maybe on a wooden table. Some plants.

Text says "the answer to my problems probably isn't a taxidermy stripper squirrel. but i better double check."

Most neighbourhood Facebook groups are piping hot garbage fires, but the Fenelon Falls group is exceptional. This is literally the most wholesome thing I've seen on Facebook in ages:
A local man says "Hi everyone, Doug Martin's broccoli decided to all "pop" at once. He's got lots so if you are looking for delicious fresh broccoli his farm is at [redacted], Fenelon Falls. Thanks and have a great day!

I, too, would post anonymously if I were asking this question.
"Anonymous participant" asked, in the Lindsay Ontario Facebook group:

"Is there anywhere good in Lindsay that does perms and mullets? Also willing to travel to Peterborough if anyone knows anywhere good there!"

I know everything is horrible but please enjoy this Vaseline glass epergne I found (and left) at Red Rock Antiques near Bobcaygeon; it is STUNNING.
Vaseline glass epergne with three lower vases and a larger central vase in a brass base. The vases are opalescent at the outer edges with vertical stripes. The brass base looks like leaves. The same epergne under UV light, showing that gorgeous uranium glow.

This would be the graph in question. It was so eye-popping I instantly screen-capped it.
A graph titled "Trade policy uncertainty is ~65x the average level"

captioned "Trade policy uncertainty has shattered historic records

Graph extends horizontally from 1985 to 2025, with low peaks (around 1000 for NAFTA prior to 1995 and at about 2000 for "Trump 1.0" leading up to 2020. The graph goes to 9000, and April 2025 is at about 8000.

Ok, art-lovers. Help me figure this out. Picked up in a local (Kawartha Lakes) auction. No info on provenance, artist, etc.; we just liked it. Looks like it's screen-printed? I dunno, grade 10 graphic arts was a lifetime ago. Signed 'vers sacrum bart 67'.
A three colour poster showing a stylized portrait of a man in a hat with a long, walrus-like moustache, over the word "WALRUS". Behind him, the setting sun (in fluorescent yellow) with navy-outlined clouds. 5¢ above his shoulder on the right, and the word "postage" below "Walrus". Very psychedelic looking. UV-reactive (both blue and yellow). No idea if it's actual vintage '67 art but the paper is yellowed so it might be.
close-up of the signature

'ver sacrum' means 'sacred spring' in Latin and was the name of a turn-of-the-century Austrian art magazine that was not published in 1967; The Walrus magazine was *also* not published in '67.

Who is Bart? I don't know!

The birds were quickly identified as sandhill cranes. Some replies offered additional information. I did not know, until this point, that people ate sandhill cranes. I had doubts, so I hit The Google Machine.
Blurry still from the video posted, showing two sandhill cranes walking through a brown field with a red post in it. Behind them, leafless trees."Sandhill cranes. Very tasty. Better than steak" says someone.

"ribeye of the sky" replies someone else.

More backyard destruction, from a better vantage-point, where you can really see how much clean-up we have ahead of us. Trees down or damaged in every part of the yard.Shaun's gloved hand beside an ice-covered branch, for scale. That is easily an inch of ice accretion.Photo of a stripped-down branch, no longer on our roof, supported by planks. Looks unsafe. Probably was unsafe. Whatever. We got the branch down, nobody got hurt, and we didn't do additional damage to the house, so I don't care. Backyard devastation, sans-ice. Most of the broken trees are Manitoba maples, so no great loss.

Branch on roof. It tore off the soffit, fascia, and eaves, but the rest of the roof seems to be intact. Tree down in front managed to not destroy the porch roof, for which I am grateful! It definitely tried, though. Love those crazy ice fingers. The ice build-up on those branches is the most accretion I have ever seen, and I hope I never see that much again.Poor icy cedar. Pretty, though.

I've never seen so much ice. It was thick enough on the grass that in some places it didn't even crunch when you walked on it.

My Jamaican immigrant supervisor, once I explained everything to him, said "oof, sounds like an icy hurricane" and he's very close to correct (thankfully we didn't have too much wind; the damage was all from the weight of the ice). Freezing rain started Friday and ended on Sunday morning.
Another photo of the devastation in my backyard. The barn on the left is fine, but the trees beyond - shitty Manitoba maples (which tend to lose branches in a slight breeze) have been torn to shreds. A larger pine in the background is bent but still standing.Photo of an old black walnut. One branch broke left, narrowly missing my neighbour's pool and garage. One brock right, landing on our roof. The rest remained standing; we'll definitely try to save what's left of this tree.View of the branch resting on our roof. The evergreens near the house were heavily weighed down but did not lose any branches. Side view of the trampoline showing ice above and below. That ice is nearly an inch thick.

Some photos from the immediate aftermath; I did not sleep at all on Saturday night (the constant sound of trees cracking and breaking, and heavy branches crashing to the ground all around us (and onto my house at one point) doesn't make for a good night's rest. I went out as soon as the sun rose.
Photo of an ice-encrusted stop-sign on a corner. To the right and in the background, a smaller sign with an arrow and "Kawartha Lakes 18" printed on it. The road beyond is covered in ice.
You probably think this is a normal-sized stop-sign, but this is one of those giant, 2-foot stop-signs, if that helps to add scale to the ice on it. Everything on the ground beyond is ice, not snow.Photo of a very icy tree, with many branches fallen below it, over a paved shoulder of a road. A wire runs through the branches.
That poor old maple tree lost a lot of branches. The line they're resting on is an Eastlink fibreoptic cable.A side-view of the maple tree, showing several large branches on the ground. Anyway, now that I have modern conveniences again, please enjoy these images of "icy hell in the Kawarthas": On the left, this is how many people were without power in this region as of April 1. On the right, the current situation (CoKL is at 36.62% outage).
A map of Ontario, showing the percentage of customers without power in various regions on April 1, 2025. Most regions are blue (0%). Simcoe and Peterborough counties are around 80%, and the City of Kawartha Lakes - that dark red blob in the centre - is between 90 and 100% (actually around 97-98%, apparently).Map showing outages as of April 7 - the City of Kawartha Lakes is still in the worst shape, but only 36.32% of customers are in the dark.

This ad popped up in a news article I was reading. Quitting drinking in this hellscape seems like a terrible idea, but if it'll turn me into an anthropomorphic, overly-muscled lion-man then fuck it, I'm all in.
A strange ad for a "NO ALCOHOL CHALLENGE ACCORDING TO THE AGE" which recommends those between 25 and 33 should eat 1 medium pear, 1 slice of toast and 2 boiled eggs for breakfast; sliced turkey or chicken (no amount given), 1/2 cup of hummus, and 1 whole (???) cucumber for lunch; and spinach salad, 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt, and a banana for dinner. Sadly, the meal suggestions for the other age groups are illegible and possibly not real words.

SUCCESS!!!
A still-snow-covered kia (I swear it's a kia under there) in what can only be described as a snowy trench, between two 7' tall snowbanks. To the right side, part of a red brick house is visible. there are pine trees on either side of the trench (it's a driveway! really!) have sagging branches, heavily-laden with snow. There is so much snow. This photo is about 90% snow. I cannot adequately stress how much snow is in this photo.

It snowed more last night, so I got up early and went out to shovel (again). I have somewhere to be tomorrow night, so at some point, we need to be able to get the car out of the driveway. (Shaun will be helping today, too).
Photo of a car partially obscured by a massive, 7' tall pile of snow that extends most of the way into the driveway. An upright shovel, which is 4' tall, gives some perspective to the scope of the problem.

God, there is just so much snow. I have never seen this much snow. And it looks like the lake-effect snow machines are starting up again, so we'll probably get more this afternoon.

...are we *sure* this isn't the start of a new ice age?

The view out the back door. Please. Please no more snow. (We are expecting about 50 cm more over the next week so there will probably be more snow whether I like it or not).

We have so much snow. We're being walloped by another squall at the moment. I tried to take a picture of the pile of snow on a branch right outside my back door using a banana for scale by embedding the banana in the snow, but that didn't quite work. Banana and banana imprint for scale?

Unapologetically stolen from a friend on Facebook. I would add that context is also very important, which does absolutely nothing to absolve Musk, who was essentially a Nazi doing a Nazi salute at a Nazi rally.
A diagram showing a human figure raising their arm by degrees in front of them in an arc. At the bottom, it is labeled "REST", above that (about 30 deg) is "PET DOG", at about 60 deg is "PET CHILDREN", at 90 deg "CALL TAXI, and at the top is "CALL WAITER". Everything between "CALL TAXI and "CALL WAITER" is in red and is labeled "NAZI".

while this is an oversimplification (as a relatively short person, my "hailing a taxi" pose tends to be in the "NAZI" zone, I'm also... waving my arm. At a Taxi. Not standing on a stage in front of thousands of people. Again, context is everything.

We have a family waffle recipe. My German grandmother used to make them for me. My dad also knows how to make them, but I never learned, so I asked him to send me the recipe. He did! This is going to take some trial and error...
A clip of the email I got from my dad, showing the recipe for waffles. No measurements for flour or milk. Thanks, Dad.

Recipe:
One third pound of melted butter
Four eggs
Cup of sugar
Four tablespoons of vanilla
Milk
Flour
Heaping tablespoon of baking powder
Anise seeds ( about two shot glasses)
Mix it all up. The mix should be fairly thick not runny.
If you put too much in the waffle iron it will squish out the side. You’ll figure out the right amount😉
That’s it! Go crazy!
😘

Meanwhile in Canada
An average-sized banana sits beside an enormous Brussels sprout on a wooden table that could probably stand to be wiped. Oops.

I realize that "banana for scale" is useless in alt text, so to be precise, the Brussels sprout is about 55mm across. It is gargantuan. It is basically just a small cabbage at this point.
