I'm struggling with forgetting to run expo prebuild after a native dependency is added. Maybe y'all could add an option to enable running prebuild whenever it is detected that the fingerprint has changed. That way it could not just rebuilt the app but also run prebuild before hand. That's all. 🙏

Tried @graze.social to track App.js Conf updates and I'm impressed by how intuitive the custom feed setup is! The keyword and post-type filtering work like magic. Perfect for staying on top of conference buzz. Can't wait to see everyone at #appjsconf! 🚀

After testing various AI design tools over the past year—including Figma's latest AI features—Google's Stitch finally blew me away. It generated a clean, modern dashboard from just one initial prompt and five follow-ups. The results are genuinely impressive. 🎨✨

This is really cool. Congrats on the first release! No issues install it. Maybe add a crumpling sound when trash can is clicked...?

I would be curious to learn what sent you down the path of building Legend List. And also if you or others have encountered cases for which it is not good to use (yet). Looking forward to your talk! See you in Kraków.

Big shoutout for the livestream on protected routes — seriously cool stuff. I almost missed it while skimming the SDK 53 release notes, but it’s a gem. If you haven’t caught the video yet, definitely give it a watch.

My Mac was running out of space and I discovered this little command. It finds all folders that are larger than 2G and only displays folders that you can access. I found a bunch of old Android SDKs, iOS simulators and a few other large files / folders that could be deleted.
It shows the command: du -h -d10 -t2G 2>/dev/null

Well...it works but maybe having a light and dark mode favicon is against best practices? Or I'm doing it wrong but I could only figure how to set one in the app.json for Expo to export the favicon.ico for web (to be used with EAS hosting). #reactnative

Wishing I was still hacking from a bayou somewhere in Louisiana instead of an indoor standing desk. Those days last week were fun.

She will only dictating her changes and won't require any knowledge of git to put up PRs. But I guess it's good to understand the fundamentals.

It's that native feel! But... Restoring scroll is not free or a native feature (at least not afaik on Android). Personally it works for me on Bluesky fwiw. Icons are generally a design choice and same across mobile/web. Seems almost impossible to match the OS theme icons in an app.

Like a logic bug. I guess we always have the migration files in git so we can use those for audit. Right now it's only two of us making changes so it's not a big deal. Maybe I haven't found it in supabase but some audit trail on each RLS to view a history could be useful. And yes, AI is knows SQL!

Thorben Primke @thorben.bsky.social · 14/11/2024
RLS is still new to me but I find it great to work with and efficient. Have you found a good way to monitor changes to catch incorrect or unintentionally changes?

In the main apps, we did from like 2017/18 to early 2023 as a brownfield integration. On my team (twotwenty.pinterest.com) we have used it to built two standalone apps - one for creators to livestream Pinterest TV shows and one that didn't go past initial market experiment. No active usage atm.

That there aren't follow/unfollow buttons on the users of a list like there are on starter packs. Perhaps a feature or as intended. But I thought they were there before I pinned it - fussy memory though.

Any particular pros/reasons that made you choose Nativewind this time?
000
Thorben Primke @thorben.bsky.social · 09/11/2024
There really isn't an excuse anymore for an app not to embrace edge to edge and use all that vertical real estate (esp on Android). Thanks for creating this lib! 🤘🚀

What did you pick for styling? Tamagui, NativeWind or something else?

Perhaps something along the lines of gotchas and/or pain points from building a universal app or anything that they would architecture / set up differently if they would start a new project now.

What are yours? The native feel is really objective. Probably a different metric based on who you ask. For me it's synonymous with the level of craft or polish that has been applied to an app. There are examples to be found no matter how a product is engineered under the hood.

Thorben Primke @thorben.bsky.social · 04/11/2024
I didn't even think that was possible. Also I like just paying once a year but maybe others are doing that as well now. And paired with betterroaming when traveling abroad it's a perfect combo.

I finally got around to trying out a fresh @expo.dev 52 project with swmansion's Radon IDE. What a delight to see it break right there in the IDE. 🚀✨🚀 Next need to use the preview feature - reminds me of Compose Preview on Android.

I have also used github.com/ezyang/ghstack before (and it worked well with a project on GH) but I couldn't make it work with GH enterprise and security permissions. Graphite would be great but requires onboarding a vendor (and security considerations).

Some of us at Pinterest use github.com/ejoffe/spr - you still have land each PR manually (and for us this requires to wait for CI each time) but it supports merge queues. But you never have to branch manually. Landing a big stack is painful. But it's the best I have found after we moved off phab.

Great write-up. "Feels native" is a subjective expression in my opinion. iOS 14 modal is one where it just requires the extra config with RN and if not done can be easily called out. Beyond this, "feels native" in my opinion is also associated with how polished an app is compared to the top apps.

Thorben Primke @thorben.bsky.social · 24/10/2024
When I started building a universal RN app, I didn't expect to go deep on tanstack table and forms (react ts form / react hook form and zod) but tables and forms are at the core of this product. 😊🚀
