Not sure how much attention this will get, but it’s quite a big deal - Labour has pulled its support for the Govt’s controversial census ‘modernisation’ plans, meaning it no longer has the 75% majority it needs in Parliament: newsroom.co.nz/2026/08/03/g...

Winston Peters says Luxon ‘premature’ to suggest Asia-Pacific, Europe push back on tariffs
As US President Donald Trump throws markets into disarray, there appears to be conflict between how Luxon and his deputy believe the Government should respond.

PM Luxon gave a speech this morning suggesting CPTPP and EU countries could get together to respond to US tariffs. This afternoon ... Foreign Minister Winston Peters dismissed this as premature. Mixed-messages as Luxon is due to make calls with world leaders this afternoon.

Trump announces ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs
US President Donald Trump says the White House will impose a 10% tariff on all countries, including NZ’s, trade and higher “discounted” reciprocal tariffs on many of its closest allies.

Thomas Manch @thomasmanch.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
Trump's "liberation day" is here and Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on all countries, including NZ. And there's some janky accounting to work out how much NZ's tariff rate on US goods. The real tariff rates are much lower.

New Zealand’s case for a Trump tariff carve out
Two weeks before trade-smashing tariffs may be levelled on Kiwi meat exports, Foreign Minister Winston Peters has a chance to make New Zealand’s case.

Thomas Manch @thomasmanch.bsky.social · 18/03/2025
There are tariffs on US products we could lower - but that could have some complicated implications for our other trade relationships. Beef has been a growth export to the US, and could be subect to agri tariffs. Fortunately we have other markets - but they might not be as good.
110
Thomas Manch @thomasmanch.bsky.social · 18/03/2025
By and large, NZ pays its way into the US market at a greater rate than US products are tariffed into NZ. And there's the obvious advantage (from a Trump perspective) in our trade deficit with the States.

Thomas Manch @thomasmanch.bsky.social · 18/03/2025
Winston Peters will meet Marco Rubio in the coming hours, and no doubt Trump tariffs will be front of mind. On The Post I've got a run down of the trade relationship - and the case NZ could make to avoid trade-smashing tariffs.

Is the Govt is thinking of exploiting this mineral wealth as other Pacific countries are? It's unclear, but the way Collins has started talking about it - I wouldn't be surprised if something more emerges. Clearly its a consideration for the defence capability plan.

A common thread within all this: critical minerals. Not only in the Cook Islands agreements, and Trump's Ukraine war deal. Defence Minister Judith Collins says minerals in NZ's vast seabed needs defending also. "We have enourmous wealth...other countries know that."
