For me, getting to refer to someone as Egregio/Egregia is its own reward.

Totally. And it's the perfect candy for a dish on my desk. I eat it, because it's candy, but I don't eat too much of it, because it's not very good.

You know what, Bradley's Arnold is actually an appropriate place for some baroque gilding and neo-classical architecture.

Exciting times ahead for those of us working in the Vatican Archives and Library. It looks like they're expanding into the parking in front? infovaticana.com/en/2026/09/1... Just, please, please, keep these places open during the building work. That 3-year closure of the BAV was deeply traumatic.

Jumping onto this (and building on the work of Julia Hillner, cited here): if you're interested in bringing some of these sources into the Latin classroom, this open-access edition includes the letters of Galla Placidia, Anicia Juliana, and other imperial women: pixeliapublishing.org/book/letters...

Regional pattern: In Minnesota, it's "You bet" (often caricatured inaccurately as "You betcha"), a phrase that signals not only the willingness to help on this one occasional, but a diachronic state of reliability.

It's true, but the movie can really override everything. I remember reading an essay, and gradually coming to realize that it was based not on Herodotus, but on the movie "The 300." The essay was supposed to be about Sallust.

Has anyone encountered this abbreviation before? (It's 18th century-- too late for Cappelli.) By context, I would guess "etc etc" but that's just a guess.

Would you believe: this real "cleaning robot" was created (by a 6-year-old) almost entirely from materials found in the recycling bin. I'm starting to think that *paying* for children's toys is a huge scam.
A picture featuring several bits of garbage taped together, with a googly-eye added at one side. It would take a child's imagination to believe that this thing was any kind of "robot."

Lexicographer wanted at the TLL! Deadline end of August. Somewhat surprisingly, the advert doesn’t say how good your German needs to be – the TLL is based in Munich, and it’s in the nature of the job that you need to be in the office – but of course the dictionary itself is written in Latin anyway.

Sick of all this Odyssey discourse. What I really want in a movie is something kid-friendly, maybe a comedy. You could still have classical figures, like Callimachus and Apollonius Rhodius... That's right, this whole thing has just been a lead-up to NIGHT AT THE MUSEION

Oh, though interesting sidenote: Lipsius didn't get the quotation directly from Barbaro- the intermediary source was Melchior Guilandinus' "Papyrus." I had never even heard of Guilandinus or his work before, but it's super interesting.

Picture of several books on a shelf. One of which is huge, must way a gajillion pounds, and has a beautiful image of Mithras. Title is "Terme di Diocleziano: la collezione epigrafica."

Barbaro also attributed it to Aelian, though I never found out why. Simple mistake or memory-slip? Did Lydus' work travel under Aelian's name? Idk.

Thomas Hendrickson @thomashendrickson.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
I came across a neoLatin author (Lipsius) who paraphrased a bit of "Aelianus"- but I couldn't find it anywhere in Aelian. New fragment? No! I eventually tracked down Lipsius' source (Ermolao Barbaro) who gave the verbatim quotation, which revealed it was actually from John Lydus. Fun rabbit-hole.
