I think this area is particularly important with the Americans proving themselves to be unreliable partners. If tensions with the US grow, we could find ourselves in a position where European astronauts are effectively grounded. Thats why restarting projects like Hermes is crucial.

I suspect America over assumes it's hand though. Theres a huge trade deficit with US-EU because US goods aren't up to EU regulatory standards ...and American power projection is contingent on its overseas bases. Which is contingent on rapport with EU US needs Europe at least as much as EU needs US
