Deer Spirit. Edo Period, Japan. 1615-1868.
Standing atop a swirling, golden cloud formation against a vast expanse of deep indigo, a sacred white stag turns its head in quiet, alert grace. Adorned with a ceremonial harness and an ornate saddle (kura) fitted with delicate brass bells, the stag bears upon its back a branching sacred tree (sakaki). Rising above the foliage is a luminous, oversized golden disk representing the sacred mirror, fringed by fluttering white paper streamers (shide) and cascading clusters of wisteria. In the upper register, the dark, forested ridge of sacred Mount Mikasa rises beneath a deep sky holding a glowing celestial orb, its forested slopes cradling partially hidden shrine roofs and white blossom clusters. The high-contrast harmony between the brilliant gold leaf (kinhaku), the pristine white coat of the messenger, and the light-absorbing indigo field creates a striking visual hymn to divine epiphany.
Executed during the Edo period (1615–1868), this painting belongs to the venerated genre of Kasuga Shika Mandara (Kasuga Deer Mandala), a devotional art form born from the syncretic fusion of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs (shinbutsu shūgō). Centered on the Kasuga Grand Shrine in Nara, these mandalas honor the divine messenger (shinroku) of the deity Takemikazuchi no Mikoto, who according to legend traveled to Nara riding upon the back of a sacred white deer. The gold disk surmounting the sakaki branch symbolizes the manifestation deities of Kasuga (Kasuga Daimyōjin), operating under the honji suijaku doctrine wherein Shinto kami are understood as local avatars of universal Buddhas. The cascading wisteria directly honors the ancestral tutelary deity of the powerful Fujiwara clan. The delicate mineral pigments, gold foil gilding, and precise line-work exhibit the high achievement of Edo religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery in sacred painting), designed to serve as a portable focus for private worship and contemplation.

The Dallas Zoo & Fort Worth Zoo, both wonderful programs, are working with Texas Parks & Wildlife to restore wild populations of Texas horned lizards (Phrynosoma cornutum) via zoo breed & release programs. 2026 is already a RECORD year: > 1000 lizards released, with documented wild-born babies.
A gloved human hand holds a round plastic container like you might put a salad in, but there are teeny-tiny horned lizards all alert looking and fierce inside.

"Aaand off they go!
Yesterday, 116 Texas horned lizards started their exciting journey to be released into the wild. Our team has worked tirelessly since their hatching to ensure these little ones are fully prepped and ready for this big moment. Stay tuned for more details on their release!
Our Texas horned lizard conservation program is a collaborative effort with Texas Parks and Wildlife, Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation, and several of our dedicated zoo partners."An adult horned toad sitting in sandy dirt in West Texas, with a mix of native shrubs and non-native grasses in the background. They're well camouflaged against the red-brown dirt, covered in spikes and watch the camera warily.

Poling Upriver against the Wind (detail) Formerly attributed to: Shutoku 18th–19th century MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink on paper DIMENSIONS28.1 x 44.7 cm (11 1/16 x 17 5/8 in.) (height x width) CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection
Hunched low against the fury of a headwind, a solitary boatman straining against his pole (sao) drives a slender skiff through turbulence and mist. The figure is rendered in dark, explosive ink marks that capture the bristling texture of a coarse straw raincoat (mino), his face buried deep within his clothing as he leans his full body weight into the task. Above him, razor-sharp, sweeping strokes of black ink slash diagonally across the upper field, depicting reeds or branches whipped flat by a sudden gale. The boat itself is constructed with a few swift, wet calligraphic strokes, floating atop a pale, unadorned wash that evokes the chill, boundless expanse of a stormy river.
Formerly attributed to the painter Shutoku and dating from the 18th to 19th century, this hanging scroll (suibokuga) belongs to the lineage of Zen-inspired landscape and figure painting (sanzui jinbutsu-ga). The motif of the solitary boatman struggling against natural elements draws upon a deep classical heritage in East Asian art, where the humble fisherman or ferryman serves as an allegory for the human soul navigating the tempestuous currents of existence. Collected by Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow—one of the pioneering American patrons who helped preserve Japanese cultural heritage during the rapid modernization of the Meiji period—the work demonstrates the extraordinary economy of brushwork (gatai) characteristic of Japanese ink monozukuri (artisanal mastery). With astonishing brevity, the artist compresses motion, atmosphere, and raw physical exertion into a tiny, concentrated fraction of the paper surface.

Broward County, Florida had 2 problems in 1972: - a giant pile of used car tires. - low levels of game-fish in coastal waters Broward Artificial Reef Inc. (BARINC) aimed to solve both problems in one fell swoop. 2 MILLION TIRES would be used to construct an ARTIFICIAL REEF. What could go wrong?😉
A barge loaded with tires has two or three people at one end managing the piles and their deployment. It's an old black and white photo.
