The idea of "NGO coin" as a seductively beckoning path to riches and comfort is totally wrecking me
I admire XXXXXX hugely. As somebody literally forced out of Russia for his opposition to Putin, it would have been so easy for him to take the NGO coin and peddle the same old nonesese Team West line many of them do.

Struggle to say how sad this news makes me "Sasha Delemenchuk, founder and director of the Tbilisi Shelter City programme, has passed away." www.facebook.com/tbs.shelter/...
Sasha Delemenchuk, founder and director of the Tbilisi Shelter City programme, has passed away.
Some people build organizations. Others build a home. Sasha built a home for dozens of activists, journalists, and human rights defenders who, at some point, found themselves without support, without safety, without the strength to continue. She found them in their darkest hour and did what seems impossible: she brought back hope where almost none was left.
Many of those she helped know this moment better than anyone. The moment when you no longer believe anyone can help, and then you find someone who simply stays by your side. Not as an expert, but as a person who decided that your safety and your life mattered.
Sasha is no longer with us, but everything she built, everyone she helped, and everyone she brought back to life and to the belief that help is possible- that is what will remain.
Thank you for being our foundation, Sasha. What you created, and the memory of you, will live on through everyone you saved.
Further information will follow later.

While this is obviously nonsense - just look at the ngram for deportation, migration and climate since 2000 - it's striking that the truth - that Europe is divided on immigration, with many, perhaps majorities, strongly in favour - goes unvoiced. It's always the loudest who insist they're silenced.

Thing about twitter radicalisation is that just a few years ago people you probably didn't agree with on much still didn't say things like "can't even say you're English these days" I _wish_ there'd been a moment in Germany the past five years when Migration and Abschiebung weren't perennials!

Elections are approaching, and Orban’s government is warning that if he loses Hungary will be dragged into the war. Top editor: we need at least three stories a day on the Russia-Ukraine war. The average until now has been 1.8/day and that’s not enough. “We need to ramp it up”

Here, Orban’s press chief emails to tell staff exactly what the headline and lead of a story should be. “The European Jewish Association’s president thanks Viktor Orban for standing with Israel and Jewish people”

Incredible cache of internal emails from Hungarys state news agency last week showing how news was shaped. Here a top editor tells staff to write high up that the suspect “in the Swiss train murder… is Eritrean”. That was in 2019, when government comms were all about the dangers immigrants posed

BUDDING AUTHORS! Are you looking for a publisher for your first book? Have you considered the Peter Brown approach?
The first part of the business was easy. It involved the crucial link between All Souls and the wider world through its London fellows. As I have explained, the London fellows did not remain in Oxford as
academics; but they retained their membership of the college and would often appear at weekends. Charles Monteith (1921-1995) was one such fellow. He was an editor in Faber and Faber in London. In December 1959 | discussed with him, over a drink before dinner, the possibility of a biography of Augustine. I then sent him a full proposal. As one fellow of All Souls to another, he agreed that Faber's would consider a biography of Augustine whenever I chose to hand in the manuscript. It was as simple as that.

Love this chart. Orban poured billions into football, creating a network of lavishly funded academies designed to groom the next Puskas. One Szoboszlai, trained by his dad outside the Orban system, is alone worth half the value of the entire Hungarian national team www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Joining the encyclical clamor to add that it’s very tempting to see this exaltation of the moral value of caring for and loving children as a sly announcement that I’ve got rocket guy’s number
Reading stories to a child, offering company to an elderly person and arranging a home so that it is welcoming are simple gestures often rooted in family life. They teach us to value care at a societal level and train us to recognize others as persons worthy of attention.

Modernity is so old (Constantin Ardeleanu: Steamboat Modernity Travel, Transport, and Social Transformation on the Lower Danube, 1830–1860, CEU Press, massive recommend)
For the young Wallachian boyar Constantin A. Rosetti (1816-1885), "The best voyage of all that have been discovered till today is the steam vessel, having also a cabin. You neither feel exhaustion nor waste time. It seems as if it is a sort of magic, you leave one room and enter another room, hundreds of hours away.29 The cabin thus became an almost charmed space, a sort of magic carpet that enabled one to fly through space and time, without any of the weariness of overland travel.

Quite an interesting stab at a new synthesis here by Magyar - after his swearing-in as the post-Orban, there will be played: - the national anthem (mainline nationalist - thesis) - the Szekler anthem (irredentist coded - antithesis) - the European anthem (immensely macron-coded, synthesis)

Looking at a certain analyst's tweet on Hungary from a few days ago, there is a structural issue in social media land in that almost everyone with relevant expertise is professionally bound to be polite even in the face of total ignorance; because of course it's hard not to take offence

Kind of mesmerizing watching the crowdfunder tick up for the Hungarian policeman who quit rather than carry out what he said was a politically motivated investigation into the opposition party. Barely a few hours old and well on the way to a third of a million.
