“Peter was just — you know, he always played the goofy guy in the show, but in real life, although he had a goofy side, he was incredibly intelligent, enormously articulate, kindhearted, always nervous and on the edge of, you know, catastrophe. You know, somebody who had dealt with a fair amount of childhood trauma, the specifics of which I don’t even really know. He sort of got his life together in his thirties, but it really took him kind of the rest of his life to find some [peace]. […] [He was] a magnetic personality, a truly special soul.” - Michael Levine, Monkee Mania Radio interview show (April 2023)

“Everything you do is an accumulation of everything you have done in your life. If each action could be fully understood, it would explain everything about you. That is the ideal.” - Peter Tork, Seventeen Magazine (1967) Photo by Henry Diltz

“Everything you do is an accumulation of everything you have done in your life. If each action could be fully understood, it would explain everything about you. That is the ideal. In everything is its opposite. If you curse with great violence, there’s a tiny spot in which your gentleness appears, and if you say, ‘I love you,’ with great tenderness and passion, there is also an indication of hostility and anger. I think a great deal about the religions of the Far East, although when I talk about them, I always feel as if I am swimming with my head just above the surface of the water, and I’m about to go under. I’m thinking all these things out and changing my ideas as I go along. I’ve grown a great deal in the past twelve months. What I was like at the beginning of this and what I’m like now are light-years apart. And what I’ll be like when another year has passed will be even more startling. But it’s not all due to the pressure of being one of the Monkees. Those pressures may have influenced the way I have changed, but I would have changed in similar ways anyhow. In the early days of the Monkees they called me a poet. ‘Peter Tork reads or recites his own poetry at the drop of a hat,’ they said, but that’s not true. I don’t consider myself a poetic person at all; I’m more of a ‘prosetic’ person.” - Peter Tork, Seventeen Magazine (August 1967)

“An estimated 12,000 screaming, frantic pre-teen-age and teen-age girls piled into Olympia Stadium Sunday afternoon to see the Monkees. […] Hearing is another matter. Forget it. The screamers drown out everything but the sounds of their own shrieks. […] [Micky and Davy] do the jumping around on stage that really turns on the kids. Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith are more subdued.” - Loraine Alterman, Detroit Free Press (August 15, 1967)“Peter is an excellent musician and can play anything from harmonica to trombone. […] The [TV] show is 50-60 percent ad lib. Peter is more intelligent than the role he plays. I lived with Peter for eight months and he’s really got a brain.” - David Pearl to Loraine Alterman, Detroit Free Press )January 20, 1967)

“Monkee Peter Tork had a warm and winning welcome for Barborah Hazlewood [on the right in the above photo] […]. She was one of the two Tarant County girls who won KFJZ disc jockey Mark Stevens’ ‘Meet the Monkees’ contest by correctly answering questions about the teen-agers’ television idols. […] [The other contest winner was Diane Porter.] [Stevens] took Diane and Barborah to a suite in the hotel where they had a 15-minute visit with Peter and a quick encounter with Davy.
Diane had worked since June on paper mache replicas of drums and guitars which she gave her television idols.
And Mrs. Hazlewood said Barborah had gone around for days with her transistor radio plugged into her ear so she wouldn’t miss the questions she had to answer to win the contest.” - Fort Worth Star-Telegram (August 11, 1967)

“Peter Tork detected my anxiety as I asked for an autograph and he talked to me about it. The first time he tried to calm me by teaching me breathing exercises and then a great hug. […] He told me to believe in myself more!” - a fan (in this pic) More at thislovintime.tumblr.com/post/7586441....
“From a very brave, candid reader:
A Story of Peace and Love from The REAL Peter Tork (Official).
We’ll call her Karen (my best friend’s name, not her name). She wrote me:
As you can probably tell…I am an anxious worrier. I’ve had it all my life. I met and got pics with all four of The Monkees (three of them several times, Mike once). Peter was the only one who ever got personal with me.
It is funny, but only Peter Tork detected my anxiety as I asked for an autograph and he talked to me about it. The first time he tried to calm me by teaching me breathing exercises and then a great hug. I met him the next evening again, he saw me trying to be calm and reached his arms out to hug me and he smiled. Then he told me to believe in myself more! This was over 20 years ago!
I think Karen’s experience gives us insight into the sincere caring in the heart of Peter Tork. Now if we can all take that advice and feel just a wee bit better in these chaotic and frightening times, we’ll all be better off, and we can prove that words and actions matter!” - Ann Moses, Facebook (March 20, 2020)
