Stepping down as taskforce lead
As I announced earlier today on the mailing list, I'll be stepping down as the lead of the ActivityPub Trust & Safety Taskforce. There'll be some process through which a new lead for the taskforce will be selected, and I encourage people with a background in trust & safety to apply, since it's mostly about facilitating and coordinating work and ensuring the outcomes remain on track. If you're interested in potentially leading the taskforce, see this issue on github. The parting gift that I've left the taskforce is a grant for the next years' worth of work thanks to NLNet's Open Social Fund.

Scoping the next year: * Proposals * Interaction Controls — replies collection usage, per-object reply controls, interaction controls, and consent respecting quote posts * Suggested Milestone Items * Issue Triage — lets look to see any other "obvious" candidates for work items (e.g., suspended, or some of the initial report items **NOTE:** This isn't a meeting to discuss implementation details, instead it's planning, as I need to get back to NLNet with a grant MoU **soon**. I will be moved the meeting along if we get too in the weeds. **Outcomes:** Each item should have a minuted vote for inclusion/exclusion, voting is -1 to +1, with -0/+0 as negative but no objection/positive no objection. We support contributions to the Agenda, please comment if there is something that we need to address during the meeting. ## Administrivia: 1. Then their implementation is less than ideal. Without as:sensitive set to true, summary is just a summary, that may mean it's treated as a collapsible area between summary & content or rendered slightly differently (e.g., tap through to view long-form content), but content warnings are […]

I agree with Silverpill that `attributedTo` is a little misplaced here, and a more explicit term would probably be better. e.g., `administrators` or `moderatedBy` (this is coming from the T&S taskforce and references a Moderation Group actor, not a collection).
000
Emelia @thisismissem.activitypub.space.ap.brid.gy · 28/05/2026
You also can take a `deny/reject` and upgrade it to a `drop` if your software doesn't support `deny/reject`. FIRES is literally just recommendations, it's not a prescriptive dataset. It's saying "this is an action you may want to do, make your choice"
000
Emelia @thisismissem.activitypub.space.ap.brid.gy · 28/05/2026
Okay, so maybe we can talk about what you think you may need for your application? The `filter` is just an array of strings (though maybe NSIDs would be better)
000
Emelia @thisismissem.activitypub.space.ap.brid.gy · 28/05/2026
The way to look at this is to look at the features that your application has to determine what filters make sense. Some will be common across all activitypub apps, others will be specific to your given vertical and how you app works. (It's essentially threat modelling for moderation/trust & safety)
100
Emelia @thisismissem.activitypub.space.ap.brid.gy · 28/05/2026
That's basically it. T&S hasn't currently been working on this specifically, because we're probably needing adopters to define what exactly filtering does. Right now I've just proposed some ideas of what it _could_ do. I do believe "silence" is a group of filter operations.

Well, yeah, that's why I linked what T&S is doing here to fix the moderator use case. At present I don't know of anyone sending cross-actor delete/update actions, so we'd be adding capability with the `moderatedBy`
100
Emelia @thisismissem.activitypub.space.ap.brid.gy · 21/05/2026
@julian yeah, but the problem with the same-origin model is that you don't know _who_ the moderator is. the actor `https://social.example/joe` shouldn't be able to delete `https://social.example/steve`'s posts or issue updates. But if steve is `moderatedBy` `https://social.example/mods`, then a […]

yes, this should just be a cursor with a pagination direction. However, the Mastodon API is proprietary and specific to their needs so they can do whatever they want and whatever makes sense for their application. I believe ActivityPub API just gives you URLs to follow for prev/next/first/last.

@hongminhee@hollo.social nice! though I'd encourage using a root identity that's an actual DID document (not just did:key), and points to the service(s) through which it works. Whether that's did:web/vh or did:plc or some other did method, the properties of a full DID document are very useful.

<p>Hi all, I'm Emelia, the co-lead of the <a href="https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-trust-and-safety/" rel="nofollow ugc">ActivityPub Trust &amp; Safety Taskforce</a> operating under the Social Web CG. We're starting this forum to try to encourage a bit more asynchronous participation in the taskforce and provide a fediverse-native touch point for people interested in trust and safety.</p> <p>This forum <em><strong>does not</strong></em> replace the <a href="https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-trust-and-safety/issues" rel="nofollow ugc">GitHub issues</a> for the taskforce, where we have specific discussion. We will still have our monthly meetings for the taskforce that happen via a video call with minutes taken and published in the repository.</p> <p>However, we do want to help people get involved in the taskforce and better understand the taskforces' current areas of work. We've a pretty huge backlog of issues, and there's currently three main focus areas of work, these are:</p> <ul> <li>The <strong><a href="https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-trust-and-safety/issues/32" rel="nofollow ugc">Initial Report</a></strong> that aims to provide context for understanding trust and safety at a high-level and what features you may need to implement in fediverse software to foster good trust and safety and moderation.</li> <li>Work on <strong><a href="https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-trust-and-safety/issues/38" rel="nofollow ugc">Improving Moderation Activities</a></strong>, this covers standardising Flag activities, ensuring that there is enough information in the activities to enable moderation teams, and ensuring the Flag activities reach the correct moderation team directly. At the same time, we're working on inter-server communication between moderation teams, without disclosing individual team members.</li> <li>Finally, we have <strong><a href="https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-trust-and-safety/issues/41" rel="nofollow ugc">Content warnings, labels, and annotations</a></strong>: this is where we've had most work right now. We've previously reached a consensus that we <strong>won't</strong> be adding a new property for content warnings, but we will document how that is currently supported (hint: it's not just <code>summary</code> being present on an object, but rather <code>summary + as:sensitive</code> being present). We're also working on content labelling, which allows usage of well-known vocabularies as to enable better filtering that is not just keyword matching, eventually the goal is to support annotations, where a third-party can publish content labels on Objects and Actors, and interested parties can subscribe — this removes the burden from the author to label their posts (which for some author's is currently a self-censorship requirement)</li> </ul> <p>Once we've made significant progress in these identified areas of work, we may take on additional areas of work.</p> <p>The taskforce meets virtually via a video call once a month, and you can <a href="https://www.w3.org/events/meetings/29a5bd4f-bb6e-4830-bbf7-7ba290e89afa/" rel="nofollow ugc">find the calendar</a> on the W3C website. It's free to participate in W3C community groups and taskforces, though you will want a W3C account with the CLA and IPR agreement in place, which can be done at:</p> <ul> <li>the <a href="https://www.w3.org/community/socialcg/join" rel="nofollow ugc">community group</a></li> <li>the <a href="https://www.w3.org/community/about/agreements/cla/" rel="nofollow ugc">W3C Agreements</a></li> </ul> <p>I'll be monitoring this forum and providing answers / guidance where I can, however, as running the taskforce is unpaid work, I'm unfortunately not able to provide extensive amounts of time, so I may not always respond quickly.</p>
