I am brewing an idea for a 2025 tech for good rural retreat in Scotland. Who would be interested? Any suggestions for venues? Possibly a social enterprise or charity. Who'd be interested on coming on board as a sponsor?

If you want to understand the #farmers inheritance tax issue you only need to read this. Thanks to @duncanstott.bsky.social for sharing. All content available in the alt text too.

Screenshot of a letter to the Financial Times with the following text:
Far from "protecting the family farm", as claimed by Tom Bradshaw, president of the National Farmers' Union (Opinion, FT.com, November 5), the inheritance tax loophole on farmland, introduced in 1984, simply pushed up the price of land without improving returns to active farmers.

This is because, like most agricultural subsidies, the value of the relief was capitalised into land values. As tax planners cottoned on to its role as a licence to avoid IHT, they advised their super-rich clients to buy land and take advantage of it. In the 20 years to 2012, the price of farmland increased fourfold.

This turned landowning farmers into millionaires but - especially since land represents a cost of production - did no good to the incomes of food producers. It created impoverished millionaires who claimed a need for more support. At the same time, because more expensive land had to be squeezed even harder for the last drop of revenue, the environmental damage caused by intensive agriculture was made worse. Taking at least some of this tax loophole away will do no harm to family farmers but will help both public revenues and the environment.

Just a shame the relief was not wholly abolished.

This is the setting you need if you want to make alt text a requirement on Bluesky. Lots of free AI tools will automatically generate alt text for you. But it also doesn't take long to write. Share if you found this useful.

A screenshot of a mobile device's accessibility settings screen. The screen shows options for alt text, media, and haptics. Under alt text, there are options to require alt text before posting and display larger alt text badges. Under media, there is an option to disable autoplay for videos and GIFs. Under haptics, there is an option to disable haptic feedback.

I usually love what Led by Donkeys do but isn't this a little misleading? The tiny peppercorn rent charged by the crown grants RNLI legal protection. Any charity or economics folks clarify this one?
