One thing that always give me a slight endorphin bump: When a book I am reading mentions another book that I have either read or own, even more so when it is a niche subject. It makes me feel connected to the author, like "hey, we have the same taste in books!" #booksky

I didn't think it was possible, but I am reading a book about Halloween and it is SOOOOOO dry. How is it possible to make Halloween boring!?!?

Switch Bitch by Roald Dahl An adult book written by a children's author. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this is NOT! 4 short stories about drunken sex, sex by deception (twice), and sex via aphrodisiac. Noticing a trend? On top of that there is major sexism and racism. #booksky #bookreview

I get that. When the news about Gaiman broke out I pulled all his works that were on my TBR. Since then I've wavered back and forth. Stardust is on there right now (which was given by a friend), but I don't know if I will be able to seperate the author from the work.

The reason I bring it up: An author I read and follow mentioned how they are editing all references to JRK and Gaiman from their old works. But there are other authors mentioned that are as bad, or worse, yet they are keeping those authors in. And that made me ponder the questions above.

I mean obviously JKR. But what about Gaiman, Lovecraft, Dahl, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Alice Sebold, David Eddings, Piers Anthony, etc? Is it possible to seperate the author from the work? Once JKR passes, do you think people will begin reading HP again in a generation or is that forever tainted?

#booksky When it comes to problematic authors, do you feel there is a certain point where it is acceptable for you to read their works? Like if you borrow it from a friend or buy it from a used book store? Or after they have passed? Are you able to seperate the author from their works? Should you?

Detroit: A Play by Lisa D'Amour A stage play about two couples living next door to each other and the experiences they share. Lots of minor drama as if someone made a play about the Nextdoor app. Slow burn. #booksky #bookreview

(2of2) Maybe I am just too cynical. Anyway... The plot is all about a person on a journey of self-discovery and learning to "become one with everything". There is talking with the wind and sun, immortality, chaste love, and a "the journey not the destination" reward. #booksky #bookreview

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho I remember reading this in 8th grade and thinking how profound it was. Rereading it as an adult, and I can't understand why it is so popular. Then again, I don't understand why most of these "inspirational" books become a success (looking at you The Secret!) (1of2)

As long as the read gets the gist of what you are trying to convey and it makes sense from the characters POV, I see no problem with it. Recently Ive read books referencing King Kong Bundy, Blue light special/Kmart, Two Broke Girls, and Gilmore Girls. I just see it as a fun inside joke.

(2of2) In this collection there is Martians, undead, astronauts, witchcraft, alien invasions, evolution, time travel, nostalgia, and other Bradbury staples. Is it chocolate chip cookie dough? No. But it was still a nice treat to the senses all the same. #booksky #bookreview

S is For Space by Ray Bradbury One of the things I like about Bradbury's short stories is they are just the right amount of unsettling, bordering between sci-fi and thriller. Each anthology is its own flavor, and much like ice cream, everyone has their preferences... (1of2)

Goblin Quest by Jim C. Hines A twist on the classic 80's Dragonlance books. You have an elf thief, dwarf cleric, warrior prince, and dark mage on an adventure. Except this story is told from the point of view of a goblin. The weakest, smallest one at that. #booksky #bookreview

Maskerade by Terry Pratchett The Phantom of the Opera as a dark comedy, with a couple of witches thrown in more good measure. Like other Discworld novels, there is some harsh reality, death (and Death), and a couple of life lessons all tied neatly in a self-contained story. #booksky #bookreview

(3of3) Characters don't use common sense, everyone has one or two defining traits that is brought up CONSTANTLY ('always lies', 'has a scar', 'short temper'), and there is very little plot to speak of. This just feels like a poor attempt to turn a DnD campaign into a book. #booksky #bookreview

(2of3) Annoying nitpick, but this book is in major need of a professional editor. There is punctuation missing, words and names misspelled, and the POV is all over the place. Even if you ignore all that, the writing itself definitely needs work.

Hollow by C.T Marleau (I am going to preface this by stating that the book is clearly a self-published debut novel.) I am always hesitant to read self-published books. Sometimes they are great (see my reviews of D.S. Tierney), but most of the time there is a reason it wasn't picked up. (1of3)

If you were in MI or Winnipeg, I could get you a job in the factory I work at. 12 hour shifts of repetitious monotony 3-7 days a week as needed. It pays the bills, and I've had worse jobs, but after 5 years here my feet are itching to go somewhere else.
