Two very independent wine shops: London W9 & SW6. We import everything ourselves from Germany (dry Riesling über Alles), France, Italy, Spain and a bit of California.

Another lively tasting at The Winery Fulham. Two Spanish wines took 1st and 2nd place, Viña Sastre Ribera del Duero Crianza & Bolet Gran Reserva Cava ahead of Kallfelz & the rest of the field. Thanks to August Bakery for the delicious bakery treats & to Annab Brasserie for a fab Lebanese dinner.

Another delightful tasting in the sunshine in Formosa Garden. Amyot Champagne was the leader at the event but what did they take home? Gerrit Walter’s dry Riesling followed by Moulin de Cantelaube Saint-Emilion 2011 and then Prinz’s Spätburgunder. Who said you can’t drink red wine on a sunny day?

What’s in the van? Nelles from the Ahr Valley, home to some of Germany’s silkiest Spätburgunders (aka Pinot Noir). Philip & father Thomas can trace their family history back to 1479. They were among the first in the valley to modernise in the 1990s and make world class Pinot. Smoky, sappy, velvetty.

What’s in the van? Pfirmann from the southern Pfalz. More of the smoky, autumnal Spätburgunder 2024. Everything they had, in fact. Plus some of the beautifully aromatic, grapey Gelber Muskateller.

What’s in the van? First in the van are more of the succulent dry Rieslings by Kallfelz from Merl on the Mosel. Oh, and we also picked up some of their delicious Rivaner grape juice.

What’s in the van? Left the Mosel Valley on Tuesday morning. Late afternoon and overnight in very sunny Calais. Arrived in London on Wednesday and delivered our bounty to The Winery Maida Vale and The Winery Fulham.

Happy Sunday, everybody! Delighted to see that the Pünderich ferry was running this morning and that we could catch the ferryman just before his lunch break. Tomorrow we’ll be driving all day, filling the van with Riesling, Spätburgunder and Gelber Muskateller.

That was a particularly busy tasting last night! Although it was a very tight field wine-wise, Denis’ Crémant de Bourgogne came out on top closely followed in joint second by Gerrit Walter’s Briedeler dry Riesling and Didier Raimbault’s Sancerre.

Johannes & Julia Becker-Landgraf took us out for a big night in the middle of Rheinhessen. Slap bang in the middle of Alzey is a wine bar which has expanded into a former book shop just opposite. “You know the owner.” Do we? “Yes, it’s Thomas Heinicke of Schloss Sörgenloch.” Small world, great night!

Since we first brought in Becker-Landgraf’s wines in 2009 their Gau-Odernheimer Spätburgunder has become a classic on our shelves. Antonella and David M visited earlier this month. Fab Spätburgunders, as always. It’s worth mentioning a recent experiment – their startling Grauburgunder Orange wine.

We’re filling the van with Spätburgunder & Riesling.1st pickup today was Michael Fiebrich in the Ahr. Apparently we gave him a card when he was working for Christophe Richter in 2007.He got in touch & we dropped in to see him. His Spätburgunders are pure & elegant. We’ll open one at our next tasting.

If you climb up to the Marienburg & go towards Reil you may stumble across the Driesch-Hütte, where you can have fabulous sausages (Rohesser!), cheese, gherkin, a slice of bread & a glass (better still, a bottle) of Riesling with an amazing view of the Mosel, the Marienburg & Pünderich.

It may technically still be spring but it feels like summer on the terrace at Die Mosel Winebar in Traben-Trarbach! Delicious food and atmosphere as ever. Great recommendation from Manuel Stolte of their last bottle of @max.kilburg 2021 Ohligsberg Pinot Noir. Sensational. Shame it’s all gone!

When in Cologne/Köln we very much enjoy Essers Gasthaus, an Austrian restaurant with generous super-fresh food and a marvellous wine list. Iris, who owns the restaurant with her chef husband Andreas, is a wonderful host. Contrary to popular belief, we do sometimes drink (and enjoy) Austrian wine!

We adore aged Riesling and Pinot Noir! 2002, 2008 and 2010 Rieslings, serene and thrilling. Pinot Noir from 2007, fleshy and deep. More have just arrived from Peter Querbach in Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau.

We stumbled across André Fays Champagne on a pickup run to France during Covid. On our way from Burgundy this week, we stopped to catch up with Marie Fays, current incumbent at her small family domaine in Celles-sur-Ource. Her Champagnes are super: fresh yet ample. We’re planning our next shipment!
