I'm often stunned by the extent to which the UK (and the rest of Europe/other colonial powers) has utterly failed to reckon with their colonial barbarism. By rights, the term "colonialism" should evoke the same emotions as the "Nazism".

Across Africa, a growing number of people are struggling to meet their most basic needs. See Afrobarometer's latest survey in this week’s issue.
Afrobarometer: More people are going without the basics - and more often

The prospect of dramatic cuts in United
States international development assistance comes just as evidence is emerging from Afrobarometer’s on-the-ground data collection that the need for assistance continues to grow: Across Africa, lived poverty is surging.

The average rate of “going without” five basic life necessities at least once during
the previous year is now the highest ever
recorded by Afrobarometer since it began
its surveys in 1999.

Across 30 countries surveyed consistently for the past decade, experiences of shortages have risen significantly on all five essentials: to 57% of all respondents for food (up by 13 percentage points compared to 2014/2015), to 55% for clean water (+9
points), to 64% for medical care (+15 points), to 49% for cooking fuel (+12 points), and to 81% for a cash income (+7 points).

Overall, nine in 10 respondents report having faced at least one of these five forms of material deprivation in the previous year.

Even more troubling is the growing intensity of deprivation in most surveyed countries: One in four Africans (24%) now report frequent shortages, or severe lived poverty.

Everyone asking the Dems to stop the unfolding coup: Don't you realise this couldn't have happened without them? They've long been whittling democracy down to oligarchy. They helped create & buttress a political system for the rich, funded by the rich. They aren't going to save anyone but themselves

I'm very much a believer in Determinism, since it's so plainly true, but also vigorous activism. The right's belief in free will only leads to the idea that you can will your problems away, or force people to choose to be 'better' just by punishing them.

Great point. SAPS is long past redemption. Upside is that it's a perfect opportunity to replace it with something radically different - just and valuable to people. Downside is that no party is anywhere near having that kind of vision. Any NGOs working on this?

To be fair, the M&G and Daily Maverick have also done some good reporting. But there's been no widespread sense of horror, as for Marikana (and even then, it wasn't enough). A monstrous crime has been committed, that's killed untold numbers of vulnerable people, but there's no general outcry. /9

There were over 100 *children* forced to work in the mine by the gangs, then trapped underground to starve by SAPS. One miner described seeing young men who had been kidnapped, mostly Mozambicans and Zimbabweans. "“They say they don’t want to go underground,” he said. “We see them crying.”" /5

I kept wondering why the miners in Stilfontein didn't just come up, rather than starve to death. The South African Police Service cultivated the lie that they were callous criminals trying to force SAPS to back down. The media (aside from Ground Up) did nothing to dispel this. Here's the truth: 1/
