There's an ugly divorce coming. He clearly never forgave Dombrowski for calling him out last year and sure seems more than a little checked out

This is going to be a fascinating campaign because on paper, Cruise getting a lifetime achievement Oscar is super on-brand with the Academy, especially over the past 15 years or so, but also, Cruise is just so weird and clearly has no interest in playing the game

This is an issue in Philadelphia, too. The chicken fingers and fries used to be one of the better food options, the fingers have turned into knuckles, at best.

I have long been convinced that one of the biggest reasons for ~waves hand generally at America~ is because there are a lot of people very aggrieved at not being part of the cool crowd. That's why the weirdo stuff was so effective.

This is a thing I enjoy about the Angels and Rockies: They're awful purely through incompetence. Terrible and expensive is a rare combination to see these days

5. "I just think they're neat." 4. "Lousy Smarch weather." 3. "Stupid sexy Flanders." 2. "Time has ravaged your once youthful looks." 1. "Hello Joe." I don't think this is the right order, but these are among the most frequently said phrases in my house between my wife and I.

I've come to realize that the idea of Ohtani has just broken the brain of some people, who, no matter what anyone else does, simply will not be able to get past the idea of someone pitching and hitting
Screengrab from the Simpsons with Ohtani and PCA added and Homer yelling "He's pitching and he's hitting!"

I actually think one big way to solve some of these issues is to completely overhaul the pre-free agency period for players: a much higher league minimum for pre-arb players and hitting free agency sooner limits how much talent a team can stockpile and also incentives higher player performance

Once upon a time in sports media, there was an obligation to cite who had it first. Unfortunately, I guess we've lost the last shred of mutual respect since Shams didn't credit the baseball card company for having it first.

In my head, Halladay's half of Wood's almost perfect game is one of the best-pitched games I've ever seen. From what I remember Halladay was more good than great but, and I know this sounds so cliched at this point, "gritted" his way through it all Please no one correct me if I'm wrong

The best way to understand how Philadelphia reacts to things is to know that it's been a pro wrestling hub for almost 75 years. Cheer the good guys, boo the bad guys

One of those commercials featured Rick Rubin, who is more or less responsible for society caring about the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is by far the most unforgivable part of it all

Over the past decade or so, there has been such obvious prospect inflation by public writers, where age and tools matter way more than production. I suspect the cause is two-fold: 1. No writer wants to be the one who misses on a superstar 2. More data-driven prospecting models over-adjust for age

1989 was a super weird music year: A lot of lesser albums from classic rock artists on their way out, a lot of not-quite-there early releases of bands that would define the '90s, and then Paul's Boutique, which is the best Beasties album but also the one that doesn't really have a defining song.

I'm very excited to run back the Wheeler-Burnes CY race from a few years ago that most people seem to agree has aged like milk, but I guess when there's a chance to be weird about Ohtani, you gotta take it, right?

This is also part of a the larger issue that is the shrinking of the media. There simply is no path to a career anymore unless you're either 1. well-connected or 2. already a brand. If it's 1, odds are that you're already seperate from most of society and if it's 2, you've probably become that way

Also, the rise of social media broke the brains of the investor class so thoroughly that they're all willing to buy every press release, no questions asked, for fear of missing out on the next Facebook. This is why it's always the same people at the top of the food chain trying to push the new grift

To me, this is actually a huge problem in society in general: People who have zero interests or personality latch onto something to become "The [Blank] Guy" and force themselves into miserable little corners of existence and can never let go of [Blank], no matter how much they grow to hate it

I say this as a dog owner who generally likes other dogs, but any owner who has their dog off-leash anywhere but a dog park should lose their dog privileges. For starters, even friendly dogs slip up sometimes, so yelling "He's friendly" as your dog is charging at me doesn't make me feel safer

This is exactly my thought on most of these young player extensions. Aside from Longoria, who doesn't really count because he was the first one through the wall, these deals almost never turn into huge team wins because the players who accept them are risky prospects.

Chase Utley is the perfect example of this. The Phillies platooned him for two years (getting only 60 PAs against lefties in 2003-04), finally let him play full-time and struggle a bit in 2005, but he clearly learned from the experience and then hit no worse than .277 against lefties from 2006-10.

Tony Fioriglio @thetonyfioriglio.bsky.social · 25/02/2026
I get the sentiment, but it depends on the dollars. There are very few of these deals that end up wildly underpaying the player like with Ozzie Albies. On the flip side, Jarred Kelenic lost $50M. There's a lot of risk in being an athlete and generational wealth can be hard to turn down.

I honestly don't know if baseball is better post-replay with basically no egregiously missed calls but dozens of technically right but spiritually wrong out calls on slides into second where the laws of physics force a runner's foot to pop off the base by a quarter of an inch for a tenth of second

This is one of my biggest gripes with a lot of the public analytics in baseball. They all assume there is a single way to achieve value in baseball and everything else is noise. The truth is, though, a lot of players disprove this thinking but may just be working with smaller margins.

The replies to this post are a clear demonstration that the userbase hear is entirely 45+ because anyone younger would have dozens and dozens of early 2000s emo/pop punk songs to choose from. A brief sampling:

This is a symptom of a broader frustration I have with most public analysis these days. It's been clear for a while that teams don't value players the way they did in 2012, but most public analysis still falls back on where things were then and react accordingly. Simply put, the curiosity is gone.

This is a better example but one that is premised solely on "Let's save ownership money" because the production gap is nowhere near enough to justify the interest gap. When the Phillies were losing 100 games a year, Howard was still a draw for casual fans. Darin Ruf, once he left Reading, was not

I'd have preferred to respond directly rather than this method, but Franco overlapped with Howard for half of 2015 and 2016 and also, Franco played 19 total games at first in his entire nine-year career, so I dunno. Doesn't really feel like a Ryan Howard issue

Tony Fioriglio @thetonyfioriglio.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
This is a weird analogy because the Phillies were straight booty for all five of those years and he wasn't blocking anyone from playing. At this point in his career and the in the Phillies competitive lifecycle, his value was far more about his contributions off the field than on it

True Story: I was working at a small newspaper in the Philly suburbs when I watched the last season of the Wire and the most unbelievable part of the newsroom saga that season was that all the reporters were always wearing suits instead of wrinkled polos and khakis.

The Brand New DISCOURSE is fascinating to me because Jesse Lacey has been a well-known creep/d-bag for decades and wrote a lot of songs about feeling bad about it but not bad enough to stop. The reaction seems more about people feeling betrayed that what they wanted to be hypothetical was reality
