Teacher tip: Instead of asking a student why they aren't doing their classwork, ask them if they are ok and if there is anything you can do to help them. Show them you care instead of making it a confrontation and/or power struggle.

One of the most impactful changes I made as a middle school teacher was to focus on communication instead of unilateral threats of consequences and to lead with kindness and respect. In the past three years of practicing this, I've only had to give out one detention and management has been easy.

As a 20 year teacher, my favorite books are Grading for Equity by Joe Feldman, Non Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg, and A Framework for Understanding Poverty by Ruby K. Payne. Their knowledge is transformative.
