LOOK BACK. Hirokazu Kore-eda again demonstrates a remarkable facility with young actors in this double adaptation tracing a formative friendship between two girls bound by a love of manga. In elegantly composed vignettes the bond between rivals/fans is wistfully inked across days, seasons, & years.

MINOTAUR. Andreï Zviaguintsev masterfully transposes a French infidelity drama to Russia at the gnawing periphery of the Ukraine war. In this clinical observation of a frayed marriage amid the mounting pressures of the conflict, ramifications rather than repercussions are the more pressing concern.

TENZING. Dutifully sincere, a long-overdue recentering of the story of the 1953 ascent of Everest on the other guy who first reached the summit alongside a Kiwi beekeeper. Setting aside the technicalities, Peedom instead frames the expedition as an outsider's spiritual journey rather than conquest.

THE LIBERATION. An ever incandescent Carrie Coon outclasses this sensational true story of a New Jersey mother who disappeared w/Holocaust reparations into a PNW cult. Lily James is suitably chilling as the scheming sorceress who preys on middle-aged yearning for psychedelic sapphic rebirth.

A TALENT FOR MURDER. Patricia Highsmith never wrote a sixth Ripley novel, but what Corbijn's mostly harmless great looking film asks is "what if she had imagined what it might be like to contemplate writing one more?" Ehrenreich gets to do some Tomplay and Mirren has a ball as a cranky recluse.

BITTER CHRISTMAS. Writers writing about writers who write about writing. Almodóvar's mostly unapologetic confrontation of vampiric autofiction via a stand-in who's reached the stage of ludicrous appearance fees and fans still grateful for minor works. Per usual, everyone & everything is gorgeous.

BUCKING FASTARD. Werner Herzog's story of synchronized shut-in Mara sisters is dreamlike in the truest sense. Orlando Bloom threeways, stranger's wedding, unexpected extra rooms. Also, there's a fox. A puzzling series of loosely connected incidents, mostly banal yet strangely memorable nonetheless.

COWARD. A century later, what a time for twunks in the trenches. Lukas Dhont conjures a period-appropriate makeshift drag show as respite from the brutality of war, performance of masculinity, and deadening drudgery of hauling bombs and bodies. Leads are magnetic, runtime as long as the Great War.

MUSK. Could only stay for the first half, but so far Gibney's immense documentary is less salacious hit piece than an extremely thorough catalogue of a deeply strange & dangerous character. Recreating him as an AI avatar makes some kind of sense, but risks fracturing the simulation for little gain?

TENDER LOVING CARE. It's all there in the title of Leigh's wondrously kind film about the essential role of tea and wine in binding the British social fabric. People talk about the realism in his work, but the angels on earth depicted here feel extraordinary. If this is his last, he's ending strong.

The scenery is of course breathtaking, but it's the union of human and mountain scale footage that almost conveys the experiences (and ghosts) these people are chasing into the perilously thin air. The first fully great movie of my very rocky TIFF (IMAX as consolation for missing it at Telluride).

MISTY GREEN. A self-sabotaging actress wakes up with seven days to grab the bag and get out of her dead ex-lover's Santa Monica apartment. Amid a splashy cast Rosalind Eleazar's almost too good in Chris Rock's unevenly executed fable of the trials and capitulations of Hollywood insiders.

RAPINOE. Although it hits inevitable sports documentary beats, the facts of her subject's final match grant Rebeca Huntt's documentary a shape ever so slightly more reflective than triumphal, equally celebrating victories in soccer, representation, social justice, and economic equality.

LA BOLA NEGRA. Flamboyant acts of imagination interlink a 2017 academic and a reluctant soldier at war with his emerging identity in 1939. "The Javis" maximalist conception is both a thrilling excavation of bloody Spanish history and a wondrously hopeful gesture at the possibility of mending wounds.

FJORD. takes a lot to incite my sympathy toward a choice of strict religious upbringing. Mungiu's highly schematic dramatization pits the absurd absolute certainty of the liberal state against the unknowability of the workings of family. With flairs natural and magic, he almost moves the needle.
