Since this vacation was a total bust I'm having a few drinks right. Not enough to get sloshed (that's not my idea of a good time) but just enough to get a good buzz going. And once the downstairs kitchen is free I'm cooking hamburgers. I haven't had the energy to cook anything this week.

The Ottawa play-by-play guy lost his voice when they scored the tying TD. He was so hoarse for the winning convert.

Yeah, I don't think anyone expected them to be Grey Cup contenders even with Dinwiddie but this is beyond awful.

2 days at Halifax Seed. I was hired in the middle of winter fresh off a 3-month delivery job and everybody and their dog either wanted a snowblower or needed one fixed. I started on Thursday. I was told I'd be on cash Saturday. I didn't even bother showing up for that shift.

95% of my water intake lately has been in the form of coffee so I'm likely dehydrated, too. I made sure to fill water bottles that are now within easy reach in my fridge. I can't drink plain water, gross.

It's a Neo Citran and chill night. I might have overdone it today but I had to get a few things that I can't get uptown. This vacation has been a bust. It's like I booked the week off (in April!) knowing I'd be sick: "Okay, according to my calculations, I should start feeling symptoms on Oct. 9..."

They're the characters that make my day. I chatted with Bill this afternoon—standing at the corner, waving at everyone. Happy as a clam.

He asked me one day if he was doing something wrong. I assured him I enjoyed his blessings. He said he believed God wanted him to do it. He's not pushing his beliefs on anyone. He just cares about others. That's Christianity to me.

I have no idea how he sees me, but he does, every time. In the summer of 2025 when buses detoured through the South End most of the routes went past Bill's building. He stood at the corner and blessed every bus. Apparently some people had a problem with it.

From the steps of his apartment building, an old guy named Bill blesses every vehicle and every pedestrian who passes by. I've been blessed by him numerous times. The blessing is in the form of, "May God be with you!" said with enthusiasm. Even if I'm on the other side of the street, he blesses me.

I'm not always a Negative Nelly (more like Sullen Stephen). It takes effort to see the good in the world, and that's a shame because it should be everywhere. Tenants offering Neo Citran and Vapo Rub is a reminder that there are good people around. Another reminder lives just up the street.

There's a 25-year gap between dentist visits in my lifetime, so almost a year between these appointments isn't that bad. (Amazingly all I had after 25 years was a cavity in a molar. I NEVER flossed. My brushing technique saved my teeth.)

My next door neighbour, a sweet older lady, handed me 2 Neo Citran packets and Vapo Rub ("I heard you coughing"), and the building caretaker said if I need soup or anything to just let her know. Today's off to a good start thanks to their kindness.

I've lived by myself for almost 2 years but I have yet to master the art of getting stuff while I was out earlier instead of waiting until 8:20 pm on a rainy Monday night to walk my sick ass down to Giant Tiger for peanut butter and bread, the only things I feel like eating right now.

Today would have been a sick day—I'm not stuffed up but this shit has settled in my chest and the fatigue is unreal. Funny, I rarely got sick in the 5 years I cleaned isolation rooms full-time. PPE works.

It's windy but look at that blue sky. Noice. I'm surprised those leaves are still green (they *are* yellowing) and still on the tree given how windy it's been lately.
A tree on a corner in the South End/Central Peninsula, with leaves finally turning yellow (the last holdouts).

I've accepted the fact that holidays are different now. I can't sit in my room and stagnate. So despite not feeling well, I'm getting out of here today. I won't push myself too hard. It's another cruise ship day and I enjoy seeing them in port. This time next month, everything will be shut down.

I'm surprisingly chipper after going to bed with body aches and chills, waking up at 3 feeling much better but still tired, then going back to sleep for a couple more hours. Coffee definitely helps. I'm by myself again this Thanksgiving but unlike last year—my 1st alone—I'm not brooding about it.

Of course I had to walk to the Superstore *after* the buses stopped for the night because while I was out today I forgot to pick up a couple of things. The fresh air actually helped my breathing. I don't feel as congested as I did earlier. I'm exhausted, but that's to be expected. In for the night.

And yes, at least with Superstores and No Frills, they're all orderly. I could go to a Superstore in Charlottetown and not have a panic attack. Not so with Sobeys.

I picked up a loaf of bread, made one turn and was in the pharmacy when I wanted the dairy section. And you can't avoid the pharmacy unless you backtrack to the front of the store. It's nuts.

Stephen M @thespiritof72.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
It's a Sobeys Extra store (next to Costco, go figure) so I get it'll be different, but with other Sobeys there's some sense of order. At this one instead of going straight when you enter, everything's laid out diagonally, which throws me off, especially when the rest of the store isn't diagonal.

The radio call of the Philadelphia-Jacksonville London game is wild because they're using a British play-by-play guy and he's already called it the pitch. And he says Jag-u-AHS instead of JAG-uars. It's giving me World Cup flashbacks.

I hadn't been there in a while and as soon as I entered the store I remembered why—the layout makes no sense to me. I don't know if they were looking for trendy or chic but it definitely wasn't designed for neurodivergent people.
