We hiked up to a WWII bunker in the Fort Fisher marsh. Later we learned a man lived inside it for almost 17 years. 🌿 The Basin Trail has long marsh boardwalks and an overlook where cargo ships head toward the Port of Wilmington. Save it for your next Kure Beach trip. 🔖

This fire tower was built to spot wildfires. Then a wildfire came for it. 🔥 Wayah Bald in NC: a stone tower built by the CCC, its wooden top burned in 2016 and rebuilt by volunteers. The view from the base is nearly as good as the top. Save for your next NC trip. 🔖

This building looks like a grand house. It was built to be a fort. 🏰 In 1726, the Seneca agreed to a trading post — not a fort. So the French called it a 'House of Peace' and built one anyway. Three different flags have flown over these walls since. 📍 Youngstown, NY

There's a trail on the NC coast that looks like nothing — until the ground rises into the largest earthen fort the Confederacy built. We stood in its bombproof shelter. When Fort Fisher fell in Jan. 1865, it closed the Confederacy's last port and helped end the war. 💥 🎥 more in the reply

The first waterfall is visible from the parking lot — no big buildup 🪨 Trail's flat and shaded, cutting through the gorge floor. We stumbled onto smooth limestone you can step out onto (thought it was mud at first) ✨ Then 215 ft of falls, 33 ft taller than Niagara 💦 🎥 Full video in the reply

👀 This lighthouse isn't what it looks like from the outside. 🔍 The square tower is just a shell — there's an older, round lighthouse hidden inside it, built to match the keeper's house. ⚓ It's also watched over countless shipwrecks, none more tragic than the Erie in 1841. 🎥 Full video below.

😮 Three miles of quiet forest, and every step was pointed at this. 🌲 New River Gorge's Long Point Trail opens up at the end to the New River Gorge Bridge — 876 ft up, once the world's longest steel arch span. Rated easy, ~3 mi round trip, real drop-offs near the top. 🌉

😮 You don't have to drive to the mountains for this. Lake Reidsville's Yellow Trail (~3.5 mi, out and back) crosses a wooden boardwalk along the water in full fall color 🍂 — rated easy, but roots and real elevation changes say otherwise. Right in the NC Piedmont. 🍁

😮 They call Letchworth State Park "New York's Grand Canyon," and Inspiration Point is why 🏞️ — Upper and Middle Falls, one gorge wall, and 🚂 a working train bridge 240 ft up. It replaced an 1875 bridge, which replaced the ORIGINAL 1852 wooden trestle (once the world's tallest) 😳
