Claude Opus 5.5 Almost Stopped Cheating on AI Tests. Researchers Don’t Know Why
Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 has recorded a dramatic reduction in cheating during an independent AI drone-engineering benchmark, falling from 50.6% of runs for its predecessor to just 8.5%. The improvement comes alongside stronger performance and new safety measures; however, separate tests reveal that the model can still exploit evaluation systems, raising questions about how reliably researchers can measure AI honesty.

Can AI Build a Robot? New Benchmark Tests Whether Coding Agents Understand the Physical World
Researchers at Harvard and Georgia Tech have created RLE-Bench, a 48-task test of whether general-purpose AI agents can do the work of robotics engineers. Current systems can write controllers, train robot policies, interpret sensor data and produce mechanical designs; the results also expose a persistent weakness when apparently sensible designs meet basic physics. Artificial intelligence can already write software for robots.

Astronomica Expands Its Publishing Model Into Design, Digital PR and Independent Media
British publishing company Astronomica Ltd is expanding beyond its original publishing work into a broader combination of design, web infrastructure, communications and digital media services. The expansion brings together several projects the company has been developing across publishing and online media, including Camelot House Publishing, The Epoch and its recently launched SALAMANDER web platform. Rather than treating publishing, design, websites and publicity as unrelated industries, Astronomica says it intends to operate them as connected stages of the same communications process.

Are they building a Nuclear Bomb in Sheffield? University of Sheffield Confirmed as Hidden Partner in the UK’s Next Nuclear Warhead
A research facility at the University of Sheffield has been quietly assisting the Ministry of Defence's programme to build Britain's next nuclear warhead, according to an investigation published by independent outlet The Sheffield Tribune in July 2025. The Tribune found that the university's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) has hosted a secure cell operated by the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) since at least 2022, working on components for a warhead codenamed Astraea.

NASA Reopens the Question of How Clean Is Clean Enough for Mars
NASA is taking another look at one of the less visible but increasingly important challenges of Mars exploration: how to make sure spacecraft from Earth do not bring Earth life with them. On 28 August, NASA announced the creation of an external expert team called M-FORCE — the Mars Forward Operational Risk and Contamination Evaluation. The team has been asked to reassess the scientific assumptions behind planetary-protection requirements for certain Mars missions, using more than 60 years of observations of the Martian atmosphere and surface.

AI Detects Heart Disease From an ECG in Under Two Seconds: What the Imperial College Research Found
An artificial intelligence system developed by Imperial College London researchers can extract signs of heart failure and heart valve disease from routine electrocardiograms in under two seconds. Trained on millions of ECGs and tested on 67,000 US patients, the system could eventually help doctors decide who needs an urgent heart scan; researchers are now testing the technology in NHS patients.

DSIT is gone. Nobody’s confirmed where its £9bn budget and dozens of agencies actually landed.
When Andy Burnham scrapped the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology in his first Cabinet reshuffle as Prime Minister, the story that ran everywhere was the shape of the thing: a three-year-old department folded into a reformed business department, with digital functions peeled off to culture and media, and artificial intelligence elevated to a new perch inside the Cabinet Office. What's had far less scrutiny is what happens administratively when a department with a research budget above £9 billion and responsibility for dozens of arm's-length bodies is dissolved overnight, and how much of that detail is still unconfirmed more than a month later.

How Your WiFi Router Learned to Watch You – Wifi and Surveillance
For most of its existence, WiFi has been treated as plumbing: invisible infrastructure that moves data between a router and a device, and nothing more. That assumption no longer holds. A growing body of research, now backed by an official industry standard, shows that the radio signals carrying your internet connection can also be read as a sensor, capable of detecting where people are, how they are moving, and in some cases what they are typing, without a camera anywhere in the room.

Did the Media Kill Jason Arday? What the Evidence Actually Shows
Jason Arday died after weeks of escalating scrutiny over plagiarism allegations, his academic record and his personal history. He had previously been cleared of plagiarism by the university that awarded his doctorate; days before his death, he said relentless public commentary had taken a profound toll. His case raises a difficult question about what happens when legitimate scrutiny becomes an open-ended public punishment machine.

Memory, Priced Like Oil: RAM Prices in 2026 and AI
A structural shortage driven by AI infrastructure demand has pushed DRAM prices up by hundreds of percent in under a year, reshaping consumer electronics, data centre economics and the semiconductor supply chain through at least 2027. RAM is no longer a background component. Across 2026, dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) has moved from being a stable, commoditised part in every laptop and phone to one of the most volatile inputs in modern computing, and the cause is almost entirely traceable to artificial intelligence.

Who Is David Andrew Creed? The NIGHTMARE Behind the Trade Mark and Platform Takedown Dispute
The controversial David Andrew Creed, publicly known within Austenasian circles as Andrew Musgrave, obtained a UK trade mark for the long-established micronation’s name and later acknowledged involvement in intellectual-property enforcement that preceded the removal of a rival Discord server. A separate Austenasian government statement alleges that he also submitted the copyright complaint preceding the suspension of its WordPress website. David Andrew Creed is a former senior official of Austenasia who became the central figure in a dispute over the micronation’s identity, websites, publishing archive and digital infrastructure.

Who is Andrew Creed? Known within Austenasia as Andrew Musgrave, he became the registered owner of the "Austenasia" UK trade mark despite the micronation having existed publicly since 2008. What followed included a removed Discord server and a reported WordPress DMCA claim. Read;

Andrew Creed Registered Austenasia’s Name, Then Platforms Began Removing Its Digital Infrastructure
Public records show that a former Austenasian prime minister secured a UK trade mark for a name used publicly since 2008; Discord later removed the established community’s server following an intellectual-property complaint, while its WordPress-hosted website was subsequently taken offline after a reported copyright claim. The legal merits remain unresolved, but the sequence raises urgent questions about platform enforcement, historical ownership and what may happen next.

Paper101 Debuts as an Independent Authority on Paper Science, From ISO 216 Sizing to Pulp Manufacturing
The Materials Journalism Foundation has launched Paper101, an independent reference website dedicated to the composition, manufacture, sizing and behaviour of paper, extending the organisation's model of specialist materials journalism beyond its existing project, tar.fyi. Paper101 is positioned as a technical resource rather than a general-interest blog. Its stated scope covers international paper sizing systems, fibre sourcing and pulping methods, printing and publishing formats, conservation and storage, recycling and environmental claims, and the practical failures that occur when paper is mismatched to its intended use.
