Most Americans think they vote directly for president. But that’s not exactly true. The system that really decides who wins is called the Electoral College, and it was built into our democracy long before television, telephones, or even trains. 👇🏻 open.substack.com/pub/theshatt...

A great reminder from Journalism Now on the difference between three very different types of professional and independent journalism: 1. News Stories 2. News Analysis 3. Commentary/Opinion Sometimes we hold writers to a standard not meant for their body of work.
Black text on a white background that states:

One person is an impartial observer, watching events unfold on the pitch, being strictly neutral, describing action, identifying players. That is like a news story.
• The person in the middle might provide deeper insights, explaining the thinking behind the manager's tactics or why a substitution has been made. This is like news analysis which provides background and context to a story.
. A more partisan presenter might be opinionated, might be trying o create t controversy.

The Foreign Emoluments Clause bans federal officials (including the President) from accepting gift, payment, job, title from a foreign government w/o Congress approval. A luxury jet is definitely a "present" or "emolument", accepting it a clear violation of the Foreign Emoluments Clause.

An important update from our Editor-In-Chief, @jjhastings.bsky.social. Cancer testing will create piblishing delays.
Hello Shatterpoint Friends and Family,

I wanted to send out a brief message letting everyone know that through May 12, I will be undergoing a series of tests, genetic tests, and physical procedures related to cancer diagnosis.

I have been navigating this behind the scenes while also being the sole creator, researcher, writer, and social media manager for every aspect of The Shatterpoint, since January.

I have made the decision to share this news with you all, as it may result in slight delays for content publication over these next 2 weeks when everything is moving quickly.

I have a series of articles ready to go and will work on getting those scheduled to publish, before my first procedure on Thursday. My goal is for there to be limited interruptions to pur publishing plans for May, but also want to be transparent in case of complications.

I deeply appreciate your support of The Shatterpoint, and for being here! It is your continued engagement that pushes me to keep creating, even when it is physically hard for me to do so.

Thank You,

Harriet Tubman's courage and determination reshaped American history. From leading enslaved people to freedom on the Underground Railroad to fighting for women's rights, her legacy is a powerful reminder of the fight for justice and equality in our democracy.
A red slide that states: Harriet Tubman was a hero.A red box that states: Freedom

Harriet Tubman's bravery and determination
changed the course of history. She played a key
role in fighting for freedom and equality,
principles that are the heart of American
democracy

Born into slavery in Maryland around 1822, she
grew up working on a plantation, where she
faced hardships that inspired her fight for
freedom.A blue box that states: Courage

Tubman became a conductor on the
Underground Railroad, a secret network that
helped enslaved people escape to freedom. She
led over 70 people to safety, risking her life
every time.

Tubman showed immense courage by
returning to the South 19 times to rescue
others. Her work helped weaken the system of
slavery, which was a direct challenge to
America's democratic values of freedom and
equality.A blue box that states: Equality

During the Civil War, Tubman worked as a spy
for the Union Army. She helped plan raids that
freed hundreds of enslaved people
contributing to the fight for freedom and
equality.

After the Civil War, Tubman became a strong
voice for women's suffrage (right to vote). She
oelieved that freedom and equality should
extend to all Americans, regardless of gender.

Our Editor-In-Chief, JJ Hastings, is DONE.
Text that states: I never in my life again want a job where I have to sit in a room and listen to a highly privileged, wealthy white middle aged man run through a list of human beings and cross them off, denying them opportunities, while discussing the "bad optics of putting certain races of people on stage", or balancing how "3 black women look better for the photo op", as if those successful, brilliant Black leaders didn't deserve those opportunities out of their sheer contributions to the organization.

I never again want to be a part of further marginalizing communities in order to put more money into the pockets of white VPs, or sit at tables where people spend their time making jokes about disabled people, sex workers, immigrants, and the poor while simultaneously using those communities to make money.

I never again want to be tasked with creating "poverty porn" that diminishes the worth and value of program constituents by portraying them as poor, dirty, helpless "losers" who have nothing to offer but a need for services, so that some multi million dollar company can then use those funds to further exploit and diminish communities.

I never again want to sit and be lectured by a mediocre dude 10 years younger than me who thinks human rights is the rights that expressly empower him as a white gay man, while telling me that it isn't an issue that 9 out of 10 people overseeing a global LGBTQ project are gay white men, and is more interested in gossiping about much better he is than his "loser brother" than hear ideas for making systems equitable.Text that states: I never again want to be in rooms where 1 am called an "opportunity hire" by someone who has to ask ChatGPT what "Al" is while creating content for topics I have actual hard-earned certifications in, because they come from a wealthy family who got them a job. Or listen to those same caliber of people make jokes about how "black people wouldn't
quit so fast if they weren't raised to be so lazy", or how "women who let themselves get raped are losers and we shouldn't have to act like they deserve sympathy". That last one was a head of HR, by the way.

I am tired of "optics", of "return on diversity investment", "what is the minimum we can do", "we can't release a equity index for our company because then our workers will see we are screwing them", "charge extra for help with outreach", and 55 page grant applications that don't even let you secure funds to give workers a liveable wage. I am tired of "execs" who liberally throw around words like "retard" and never get called out for it because if they do, people get fired. I am tired of having the backs of folks who care more about what "Ivy" you attended, and how popular and blonde you are than the contents of your actual character.

I'm tired of the non-profit industrial complex, exploitation of vulnerable communities, Ivy League superiority complexes, and the white saviourism of equity" parading as THE WORK.

WHERE ARE THE JOBS at REAL community organizations!? Where I can go to bed at night and feel proud, instead of having to pray my community forgives me for being complicit in systems that dont even see them as human beings?!

WHERE ARE THE OTHER ANGRY #CHANGEMAKERS WHO ARE TIRED OF BEING COMPLICIT IN THIS MACHINE!?

A green box that says: In more recent years, the Fourth Amendment
has been important in cases about technology
In Carpenter v. United States (2018), the Court
ruled that police need a warrant to access a
person's cell phone location history. This
decision recognized that modern technology
holds a lot of personal information, and
people have a right to keep that information
private unless there's a valid reason for the
government to access it.
