I have not played Star Wars Galactic Racer yet, but just reading the reviews is a great reminder that racing games (as with all sports games) are much better served by great characters than great vehicles. See also: a little indie called Mario Kart

Love to unsubscribe from Jon Ossoff's emails and not only still get them, but immediately receive one from Gavin fucking Newsom.

This is both DEEPLY upsetting and also kind of a sleight of hand, right? Young Frankenstein feels even older than, say, Blazing Saddles (also 1974!) because of the black and white

All good! And lol what can I say? D&D is my “I can fix him!” game.

Every year Yom Kippur reminds me that I don’t know how to fill the hours of a day if I’m not constantly drinking water and refilling my water bottle.

I played in a (short by D&D standards, long by indie game standards) 4e Eberron campaign! It was somehow my first time playing in a published setting and I kinda loved it?

Pretty sure this is dialectical materialism
A photo of the back of a Honda with three bumper stickers in a row. The first one says iHeart cats. The second one says Sharon for New York City. And the third one says my cat is a Democratic socialist

If you’re reading X-men in black and white, how do you even know which Wolverine costumes to hate?

Im purely a show watcher, and not fully caught up, but what about semi-forgotten masterpiece DOWNFALL?

It's really wild how even now X-men (imperfect as it is) remains miles ahead of the rest of the big two's output in its gender parity.

Lanterns ep 3 and Brand New Day adding juice to my theory that superhero movies/shows need way more and way cooler music cues.

I think solidly 50% of rpg drama could be defused if people understood that most manifestos are mostly for the author Anyway this one is good!

A supers game needs to wield its genre to say something about the world or to push the genre forward, even if only a little bit. It can’t just be about, like, balancing Superman and Batman’s power levels so they can be equally combat effective or having a move for meeting your clone

I’m mostly thinking about what Vincent Baker wrote about genre emulation here lumpley.games/2021/05/24/p... The point is to take the genre and run with it. The same way each issue of Spider-man has to be more than just recognizable as a spider-man story, etc

(Tim Torres was 8 when his mother and soon-to-be stepfather were gunned down in front of him on their wedding day. Placing their rings on his hand for safekeeping, he discovered that he could manifest his worst fears in black and white. Now he fights crime as RINGBEARER!)

“I bet you’re thinking, how could rules possibly model a powerset like Green Lantern’s? But look! Here’s RINGBEARER to show you!”

I Still Know What You Did Last Sam R @thesamroberts.com · 31/08/2026
Yeah most of the time they give you a whole set of knockoff heroes and the only purpose is to show how you’d stat up all the big names (and if we’re being honest mostly just to prove that Batman and Superman can work as PCs).

The dragging it out feels terrible but instantly might be worse? Had a few that rejected me faster than my buddy who worked there could send a note to the hiring manager — definitely communicates that a human looked at my resume

It’s almost funny how it’s bad even by the standards of an industry/genre built on shamelessly ripping characters!

When Jeff said “or video game” this was the first thing I thought of. I was obsessed with this in high school — made so many custom skins!

I Still Know What You Did Last Sam R @thesamroberts.com · 31/08/2026
More and more I think the problem with superhero RPGs is that they need 50% less genre emulation and 50% more genre embodiment. It’s pastiche all the way down.

My pitch was going to be that we nail down a setting. Doesn’t have to be as concrete as Blades but a distinct sensibility and collection of nouns

60s ideas, 90s aesthetics, contemporary themes — where have I heard that one before?

I Still Know What You Did Last Sam R @thesamroberts.com · 06/08/2026
I’m so torn because I love the 90s/Y2K aesthetics of the Matrix movies, but giving it a throwback aesthetic is both such a great way to break free of their influence and really, really fun in its own right. Makes me think of X-men ‘97 using 90s aesthetics/stories to address modern ideas

We really did! I just went back to Operator I Need an Exit (and, uh, may have given Sam T a peek) — it's so much farther along than I remembered... and still very cool! (Should we finish it?)

It's also easy to forget how much the TV networks played this aspect up with "special presentation" bumpers and host introductions for movies (even TV movies), themed marathons, etc. We really only get this kind of stuff on streaming around Halloween and Christmas now and it's a pale imitation.

Realizing my TV experience was the opposite (but equally great): My parents had a "we only turn on the TV to watch something specific" rule, so even a mid-season episode of whatever middling series we were watching had the feel of an event.

Maybe not quite as formative, but I will never forget sleeping over at a friend's house in middle school and stumbling upon the Aeon Flux cartoon in the middle of the night. Blew my mind — and at the time I had no way of learning anything about what I'd seen.

It will never not be funny that the album featuring “Love Hurts” looks like this
The vinyl album cover for Nazareth’s Hair of the Dog. It features a gnarly illustration of a three headed devil dog with barbed, demonic wings standing atop a pile of skulls.
