Congratulations to our PhD student Daniel presenting his first poster at the International Workshop on Clinical Pharmacology of #HIV, #Hepatitis, and Other Antiviral Drugs... his work evaluating the readability of the PrEP Drug Interactions site, which is aimed at a lay audience.
A white man with a conference lanyard stands in front of an academic poster with text and figures. The title reads 'Quantitative Readability Evaluation of Patient-Facing PrEP Drug-Drug Interaction Content.

This new website allows you to check if PrEP medicines might interfere with the way other medicines work (or if other medicines may affect how PrEP medicine works). More details about the website can be found at prep-druginteractions.org/site_news/1

👩‍👩‍👧‍👧 Great to see so many visitors at 'Meet the Scientists' event yesterday by @livuniengagehls.bsky.social at World Museum in Liverpool! 🦠 Enjoyed supporting @therexuol.bsky.social who ran a great set of 'Menacing Microbes & Magnificent Medicines' activities. 🔗: www.liverpool.ac.uk/health-and-l...
Activity involving giant microbes and different therapeutics (antibiotics, antivirals, vaccines).Wheel that visitors could spin. Had different segments labelled with different pathogens.Chart of 'Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR): expected values for children'. Plots PEFR against height.Catching infections.
Infections are caused by microbes such as bacteria and viruses which are almost unimaginably small and are everywhere.

Sometimes we can have an infection and not know about it. Some infections make us feel a bit unwell, whereas others make us very sick and some may even kill us.

How dangerous infections are depends on many factors. Some infections such as the common cold can be easy to catch, but do not make you very ill. Some infections can make you very ill, but are difficult to catch. The most dangerous infections are ones that are easy to catch, cause serious illness and cannot be prevented or treated.

Vaccines are a way of preventing infections. If you have been vaccinated against an infection, you are less likely to catch that infection if you come into contact with it.

Medicines can be used to kill microbes in your body and stop the infection. For some infections, there are no medicines to kill the microbes, but there are medicines to treat the symptoms of the infection, such as ointments and lotions to stop itching or medicines to reduce your temperature.

Some microbes can be very sneaky and change so that medicines no longer work – this is called resistance. If you are given a medicine to treat and infection, it is important to take all the medicine otherwise resistance can develop.
