I think there's a lot of fairness in that but is it not a symptom of the larger issues with USSF's inability to strengthen its pyramid? If the structure relies on the hope of MLS expansion, which does have a ceiling, then where does that leave us? Back to limited outreach and dev opportunities.

I don't disagree. No arguments against the improvement from me. Further growth potential is what's lacking imo. The USSF's job is to ensure the development of the sport. MLS's growth is a good marker for how far it has come but it shouldn't come at the cost of undercutting the rest of the pyramid.

I'm right there with you, Andrew. My biggest point being the USSF nurturing the USL's success. We have seen the MLS overtake USL markets in the past, multiple times within the last decade. You can't have a tiered system and then help one tier run over the other.

"Trying to monopolize..." is where I'm coming from. It's a reality in that MLS does and has pushed USL teams out of their markets. They're differing business models with significantly different financial backings that happen to be under the same umbrella. Anyways, its layout won't promote growth.

American sports business culture also plays a large role in this. There's very little incentive to develop and spend more if there's no penalty (aka relegation). Revenue sharing and rewarding bad teams with high draft picks is the truest form of participation trophy culture. Loser mentality.

If soccer's going to remain accessible to children, leagues like the USL need the opportunity to succeed. Pro sports play an outsized role in local development. The MLS trying to monopolize soccer in the US leaves us with entirely privatized, for-profit programs that limit who gets to take part.
