PLEASE NOTE "Paddington Bear" has the same number of syllables as "Winnie the Pooh" meaning that the songs from the Disney Pooh movies can be adapted for Paddington.

Paddington is a civic-nationalist/ assimilationist totem. An upwardly mobile subject of Empire who came here, Anglicised his name, learnt the language and eventually our funny national customs --as my own ancestors did. For the far right of course this can never be enough, which makes PB "woke".

lol the vibe shift in AI hype feels like a ploy by U.S. tech bros to permanently keep out competitors. They are cosplaying concern so they can "regulate" their competitors out of existence. It's not about safety. It's about money.

One song to the tune of another. I'm afraid I cannot get the pirates' song out of my head: "With Cat-Like Tread / Upon Our Prey We Steal"

You mean "The Evolution of the Gospel"? A novel take on the Griesbach Hypothesis, demonstrating that, in keeping with tradition, Matthew's was the first gospel to be written. is that sinister?

The Anthropic, Meta, and Google "breaking containment" incidents all resulted from setup errors (or a stunt) by the same company: Irregular. Irregular created a sandbox that wasn't really a sandbox because it had a live internet connection, and gave instructions that were then carried out online.

Enjoying re-reading C H Sisson's review of A N Wilson's biog of Lewis which I read when it came out. Author of "theologically-uninformed apologetics, and a series of best-selling children’s books" www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v1...

At the last election we had a mock hustings in my workplace, our next "Prime Minister" ran on a platform of, if you have points on your licence, you get a point removed for each cyclist you run over. I mention this only as an anecdote that indicates a general hatred of cyclists.

At the time of the Reformation, they used to say "Build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for a day. Set a man on fire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life."

Do not speak to the BBC if you are trans. Just don't do it. Tell them to go fuck themselves. Even if you know the reporter and they are not an ass, tell them to go fuck themselves anyway because they work for the BBC and their editors will do this regardless of the journalist's intent.

This reminded me, it's 20 years since Frank Ellis, formerly of Leeds University, had his 15 mins of fame before taking early retirement. I think he was radicalised by reading The Bell Curve. It's also 35 years since I first heard someone trying to win an argument by saying "I'm a member of Mensa."

A corporate solicitor is the odd one out, falling outside the "institutional not-for-profit/ public sector" category which is intrinsic to this concept of lanyardism. In interest-group theory, "institutional not-for-profit/ public sector" forms an interest group.

I once worked for a rather-unpopular public sector org, senior colleagues warned me to remove insignia etc outside of the workplace. Passed thru Westminster tube station during rush hour yesterday, all these Home Office staff on the way home brazenly flaunting their lanyards!

Dependent on the amount of US influence on that Reform bandwagon, we may have to distinguish American football from "soccer", to answer this !

I had a relative, now deceased, who was a VERY senior person in UK medicine. In his day, Wakefield would have been called in and told that a post as a GP in the Falkland Islands had been arranged for him, if he wished to ever work in medicine again in the English-speaking world.

One of the Apollo missions left a King James Bible on the moon. They would not refrain from spreading the Word of the Lord to Lunar aliens and other inhabitants of outer space because of some abstract principle about not junking up the universe with abandoned human-generated paraphernalia.

When I left home my mother gave me some advice. "To descale your kettle, just turn it on without any water in it. The coefficient of expansion will cause the scale to crack and fall off." I later discovered it also makes flames come out of your kettle, so have a fire blanket handy.

I did not know that. Meanwhile my brother just told me that to visit his new house, I had to get the train to Bromley, NOT Bromley by Bow. I reminded him that I used to work for London Transport, so, if *I* found this sort of thing confusing, plenty of other people would too !

Train map suggests this is actually Catford. As Jude Bellingham is from Stourbridge, W. Midlands, they dont have the excuse that this is his home district. "Bellingham" and "Catford" sound dissimilar and have a different number of syllables. Still baffled as to why this is a witty renaming.

I might have been amused by this when I was age 6. I've put away childish things now, but I still feel slightly ashamed of the days when I was easily amused. That and anything with a face (Binface, Boatface) is liable to provoke my Queen Vic reaction WE ARE NOT AMUSED.

There was even a spurious Almanach de Gotha produced, dated 1946, and used as the basis for some of these claims. I could tell it was a fake instantly, because it was set in Hermann Zapf's elegant typeface Palatino which was issued only in 1948.

Currently reading Chadwick's biog of MR and my opinion of Macmillan has improved. He said "We've had enough of Martha, we need Mary now." In today's context, Martha is no longer just "good at admin", she is managerial. One would have to be, to line-manage all those bishops !

“There are certain environmental issues where it is not easy to achieve a broad consensus. Here I would state once more that the Church does not presume to settle scientific questions or to replace politics.” (LS 188). The C of E sounds a lot more dogmatic -- in the bad sense of that word.
