Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Needless to say (I would like to think), for 50 years I have admired Paul Robeson as both the activist and the singer. But I had never thought of him as such an engaging and articulate man as he is here. Simple proof of how powerful racist stereotype can be. 000

Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 17/09/2026. @patrickfreyne.bsky.social Hello Patrick, I bought your book yesterday and am looking forward to it. But I spent some time and no little expense on a copy "signed by the author", only to discover some vandal/charlatan had scribbled the letters "C Z" in the space where your signature should be. 141
Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 03/09/2026A propos of nothing, can we take a minute to mention just how feckin huge Kazakhstan is? 000
Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 20/08/2026You all know how much this annoys me, but still: OF COURSE THEY ARE INVESTIGATING. There were two armed robberies. The real news would be: GARDAÍ SAY THEY CAN'T BE ARSED Why are "young" journalists so feckin LAZY? Looking at you @irishtimes.com 000
Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 19/08/2026give me a single image from a film that immediately makes you hear the song from the soundtrack in your head. (not particularly clever, but true) 010
Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Niche post This is the least important example of how journalism is deteriorating rapidly, but: There is no need whatsoever to use the first name of these players, even in the demented world of search optimisation. 000
Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I really, REALLY, don't want to play down the hardship these sailors are experiencing, but - There hasn't been a soldier in the last 4,000 years who expected hot water, a toilet, and food. 000
Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Genuine question: how long would it take for these animals to DIE of dehydration? Days? And surely they would have been calling out, and no one heard them? 000
Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 10/08/2026I doubt if ennui was really the word he was looking for. 010

Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 14/07/2026I went back to the book to check the price, but it had been - professionally - written in pencil so it could be erased without damaging the book. So maybe the price was £30? But I was on the dole, which was basically £30, plus a few hours work as a barman. Rent in my bedsit (not a flat) was £24. 1/2 100
Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 13/07/2026Not exactly what you asked for, but (worth looking at the whole Wikipedia page) 010

Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 03/07/2026There was no one else to hear it, but when I saw this a few minutes ago I think I emitted a muffled squeel of horrified delight, for this is the absolute essence, the epitome, of the pointless yet mandatory Leader from @irishtimes.com. 000

Joe Culley @therealculls.bsky.social · 10/06/2026I'm having a drink in The Last Hurrah in homage to one of my favourite writers, Edwin O'Connor. He was rightly recognised as one of the greats 60 years ago, and is now utterly forgotten. His masterpiece is THE EDGE OF SADNESS, truly a great Irish novel. 181
