2007 Marvel was a fun year of reading for reasons that aren't particularly fun to talk about currently.

Why does Mark Wahlberg look like somebody photoshopped Woody Harrelson and McConaughey into one person on this poster?

Incredible Taylor Swift wedding bit on the Bill Simmons pod, capped off by him squeaking like a children's toy. Nobody doing it like Bill.

2006 Marvel was far from my favourite year, and I am now a confirmed Civil War hater. Thankfully Brubaker was around to deliver big and keep it from being a disaster.

Passing on the solution for getting rid of the cursed most-relevant section of YouTube subscriptions (for Chrome). Works better than the other adblock solutions I've found, as that always seemed to interfere with the actual videos (maybe I just wasn't tweaking it optimally)

Had a good time with Marvel's 2005. House of M, the Pulse, Brubaker Cap and Ennis Punisher MAX a stellar quad of titles. Feeling slightly ominous about how I may enjoy 2006 though, as I have firmly not been a Millar/JMS/Jenkins guy and they seem to be getting handed the keys to the universe.

And the long list for my 2025 Match of the Year. Thus concludes my 2025 media thread.

My 2025 Wrestler of the Year (Most Outstanding if we're talking Observer definition) #1 - Kyle Fletcher While he has his slight flaws, loves an undersell to lean into more go-go-go style, there was nobody I enjoyed watching more consistently than Mr. Pink #2 - Konosuke Takeshita #3 - Hangman Page

#2 - Spider-Man's Tangled Web #14 - The Last Shoot - Brian Azzarello, Raven & Giuseppe Camuncoli #3 - The Pulse #1-5 - Thin Air - Brian Michael Bendis & Mark Bagley (wrote about these in detail in my yearly Marvel recaps, so won't repeat)

Best Comics I Read in 2025 #1 - Captain America #1-6 - Out of Time - Ed Brubaker & Steve Epting The start of Brubaker Cap is just magnificent, and while Winter Soldier gets a lot of the shine I think the first arc is superior. BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM

#3 - What We Do in the Shadows Finished off the last season at the beginning of 2025, and while it wasn't quite at the level of the peak of the show it was still an incredibly charming and warm experience. March Madness probably my favourite episode of the last season fwir.

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 13/01/2026

#2 - The Penguin So much better than a gritty show about the Penguin has any right to be. Cristin Milioti and Colin Farrell in particular were both outstanding. The plotting of the action scenes was really weak, but aside from that just an incredibly engaging watch.

Best Non-Current TV I finished in 2025 #1 - The Sopranos A beautiful show about a man and his train set.

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 11/01/2026

#3 - The Rehearsal Nathan really has an entire sub-genre locked down; nobody else makes TV like he makes TV.

100 1

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 11/01/2026

#2 - Severance Season 2 wasn't as good as the premise setting of S1, and I'm a little pessimistic about where they left it for the show to pick up season 3, but Severance still had some really high highs. Woe's Hollow was an electric episode of TV, and Tramell Tillman is a damn star.

Best Airing TV I watched in 2025 #1 - Andor Nothing extra to say that hasn't already been said, but it's wild that such a great (and expensive) Star Wars TV show got made amongst all the slop. The Ghorman anthem scene... who knew I would get emotionally affected by the space french?

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 10/01/2026

#3 - Humble Pi - Matt Parker A book about mathematical errors in the real world and their consequences. Remarkably approachable and engaging for what could easily have been dull or opaque.

100 1

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 10/01/2026

#2 - Cain's Last Stand - Sandy Mitchell I love the universe of 40k, but I bounce off a lot of the books because, put bluntly, I don't think many of the writers are very good. Sandy Mitchell is firmly a part of the handful of exceptions though; the Ciaphas Cain series never fails to be a delight.

Best Books I read in 2025 #1 - The Heroes - Joe Abercrombie Part of the First Law universe, but works as a standalone. Abercrombie is an absolute master of dialogue, and this was his finest work to this point, including the best depiction of a fictional battle I've ever had the pleasure of reading

Best Fights of 2025 #1 - Merab Dvalishvili vs. Umar Nurmagomedov #2 - Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier III #3 - Usman Nurmagomedov vs. Paul Hughes II

#2 - Satanized by Ghost Theatre kid heavy metal delivers yet again #3 - Golden With me struggling to find 2025 songs, I have to admit the Kpop Demon Hunters got stuck in my head a lot this year, despite never having watched it, and it is incredibly catchy.

Best New Songs of 2025 Went through it's a little sparse. Most of the stuff I thought came out in '25 came out in 2024. Probably just missed stuff. #1 – Templars by Sabaton I actively dislike quite a lot of Sabaton's stuff, but the 20% that hits with me really hits. Tremendous work out track.

#3 – Chris & Jack One of those sketch channels that YouTube loves to recommend, and I’d seen thumbnails for 100s of times. Well I finally gave in, watched their “A Deal with the Devil” skit, and damn the algorithm knew what it was doing this time. Have since gone back and loved every video.

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 09/01/2026

#2 – Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists Hour long improv roundtables that are pretty consistently the hardest I laugh every week. If you’re looking for a good episode to get a taste I’d recommend giving the “The Look” episode a listen. “You’re playing checkers, I’m fucking your Dad”

Best YouTube Channels I Watched in 2025 #1 – Secret Base Specifically the Jon Bois offering, although there’s good non-Bois stuff there like Scattered, Reframe and Weird Rules that are great watches too.

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 08/01/2026

#3 - Hundreds of Beavers A black and white almost silent slapstick movie about a guy being haunted a bunch of beavers. Twenty minutes in I had the thought "surely this is going to drag by 1h 48m", but somehow it's a joy throughout in a way it has no right to be.

110 1

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 07/01/2026

#2 - Ballad of Wallis Island Going in I thought it'd be an easy heartwarming watch with some solid laughs. Well it was significantly funnier than that, but what I really wasn't expecting was the tears. A film with real depth, and the core cast was exceptional.

Best Films I Watched in 2025 #1 – Blow Out A Travolta Brian De Palma film can't be a hidden gem, but I'd never heard of it until a friend put me on. What a great understated neo-noir, with a tight premise and Travolta is at his best. Plus it's 4k on YT for free. www.youtube.com/watch?v=z20y...

#3 – Ballionaire What if balatro but pachinko. It’s less serious and mathy than balatro, but that’s not a bad thing. Damn if it isn’t satisfying to set up and grow a dumb combo.

Robin. @therdouble.bsky.social · 07/01/2026

#2 – Monster Train There’s a danger for this type of game to leave you with the question “why would I play this when I could play Slay the Spire” but it’s a great compliment to Monster Train that it never once entered my mind. Every roguelike should have a version of the logbook, such a great tool

If I was to have one criticism, its that the game could have been streamlined a touch. The open-world ‘explore the area and do fetch quests’ weren’t additive, but that’s a pretty minor issue. DLC was good too.

Yeah, seems about right. Suprised Sabaton snuck in given I actively dislike a lot of their tracks, but the ones that are good do get stuck in the head.
