And at the end of the day, although it was too short, I hold my head high knowing I gave Jax my all, everyday for the almost 4 years we were together. He never had to feel alone or unloved. Everywhere we went, people would stop to say how beautiful he was and give him a pet.

It's been 15 years since I finished my first novel and I always knew I had another one (or many) in me, I just needed the right inspiration. And getting to share Jax's story with the world is exactly the motivation I needed to lock in. I want you all to hear that story.

In all my sleepless nights the last week, I thought about how I would get closure, and I realized that I knew exactly how to get closure: to come out of retirement from writing and write a novel about Jax's life.

I didn't cry when my grandparents passed, and I loved them dearly. But with Jax it was different. I sobbed. He was truly my ride or die that was there with me every day through the worst times of my life, and although of course dogs don't live forever, I wasn't ready.

But life isn't fair and sometimes those we love are taken from us too soon. But I accept that there would have never been a "good" time and even if he went a year, two years, three years, or however many years from now, I would be feeling the same way. Too soon.

Of course losing a pet is never easy regardless of the age, and I understand Jax was old for a big dog (almost 11.5 years). It just feels extra unfair cause he was so full of life. Not an old decrepit dog who doesn't want to walk or eat. He had so much energy.

Sunday he didn't eat his breakfast (dry food) but DID happily eat his wet food dinner. I felt fine getting on the plane to Germany. Then on Monday he just fell off a cliff health wise. They said the tumor was massive, but he never showed a sign until it was way, way too late.

Then on Saturday he was being a bit of a butt and not eating his dry food (which is strange for him, admittedly), but Toshabi made him some eggs and he ate those so I figured he was just being a little bit of a brat. He walked just fine on Saturday night too.

I wasn't ready to make this post but I knew I'd never be ready SO sooner than later I guess. It was just so sudden and unexpected. He was literally fine and full of energy all week (I was surprised cause he jumped up EXTRA excited to walk with me in the early mornings)
