Long before Karbala, Iranians were already grieving a martyred prince. Siyavash, the betrayed hero of Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, was mourned in song for centuries. That grief later passed into the rituals for Imam Husayn: you can hear it in the elegies sung in Iran today.

Just across the hill, Israeli occupation forces remain in Zawtar al-Sharqieh, where demolitions and military operations have continued despite the ceasefire. The Lebanese army now says these continuing attacks are making it harder to complete its deployment and allow residents to return.

Zawtar al-Gharbieh was supposed to be a test case. In July, the village became 1 of 3 “pilot zones” for an arrangement centered on Israeli withdrawal, Lebanese army deployment, the restoration of state authority, & the removal of weapons and military infrastructure operated by the resistance.
