I’ve always wanted to be an artist. It took years of concerted effort before I finally found my way into public art. None of it happened by accident or overnight. It took decades. Today I know this is my calling. Cut me in half and it says ‘artist’ right through me. I’m only just getting started!

The story behind ‘Jetty’… Today it sits in a meadow on Northey Island. In around 100 years, rising sea levels could turn the surrounding landscape into saltmarsh — and visitors may approach the Jetty by boat rather than on foot. Read the story of 'Jetty' here: www.sarahayes.art/jetty/

Community engagement is at the core of what I do — often using walking and art to connect people with place. Lovely feedback from Greenwich Trust School: “I have heard fantastic feedback from both staff and students… our students thoroughly enjoyed the trip.” #CommunityEngagement #ArtsEducation

Loving this! I used ceramic tiles for my Walton Trail Project - they can be digitally printed and cut by water jet. Would be nice for a civic art project! Plus longer lasting than painted street art!

'Jetty' tells the story of rising sea levels on the Essex coast. The artwork occupies the point at which sea level is predicted to reach Northey Island in around 100 years' time. As such, it exists in two landscapes simultaneously: the one we experience today...

I was surprised and delighted at the launch to see how naturally people interacted with the Jetty artwork. People gathered for a chat, or sat quietly looking across the marshes. That's exactly what I'd hoped for, a place of contemplation, on a little island on the Essex coast!

After 2.5 years of drawings, meetings, planning and conversations, Jetty is now part of the landscape at #NortheyIsland. If you visit, check tide times, bring a packed lunch + sunscreen. Take a moment to reflect, in 100 years' time, this artwork is predicted to be in the water.

Last Saturday saw the official launch of 'Jetty' at #NortheyIsland! National Trust's Russell Clement spoke about the site's "spirit of place" something we'd discussed right back at the project's inception in January 2024. I gave talks on the artwork and ran a printmaking workshop.

Today was a long, hot day on the island. The grass stood tall and golden and perfectly still… a rare sight on the island. The kind of weather you’d describe as ‘close.’ I came down to create signage for the event on Saturday, against the clock, and against the tide. Time and tide wait for no man!

It’s fair to say my work is inspired by the ecology of a place, and Northey brought that in abundance. Every walk brought new natural wonders, but it was the 3D texture of the mud plains that inspired the surface of the installation now living on the island. #NortheyIsland

Two and a half years ago, on a cold, wet day in January, my Conversations with the Sea journey began at #NortheyIsland. Since then I've walked the island in every season, and every conversation has helped shape Jetty. Launching this Saturday... (A few clues in the photos!)

Part and parcel of working on a tidal island is that the project involves a lot of walking! Every conversation happened on foot. Walking the landscape, noticing the changing tides, spotting wildlife and understanding how people experience the island all became part of the design process.

The Public Art Company @thepublicartco.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Public art is about creating connections between people and place. 'Jetty' grew from conversations with communities and understanding of Northey Island. The aim was to create something that helps visitors engage with the landscape, reflecting the impact of sea level rise.

My first visit to #NortheyIsland was meant to take a couple of hours, 4.5 hours later, we were still exploring! I realised this wasn't just about creating an artwork, it was about understanding a place. That first visit shaped everything that followed. Jetty launches this Saturday. #NationalTrust

Why I love working with the @nationaltrust.org.uk Every project starts with one question: What does this place need? Perfectly matching my approach to public art, revealing the stories, history and ecology already there. After 2½ years of collaboration, Jetty launches at Northey Island this Sat.

Not every project gets chosen. 🫙 This was a proposal built around glass, weathering and time – I loved the idea that it would slowly change in the salt air and become part of the landscape. In the end, health and safety won. Still a beautiful idea.
