Reminder for whoever needs to hear it, today's cutting edge AI models are still very jagged in their "PhD-level intelligence". Put more bluntly, Opus 4.6 Extended sometimes can't count to 2. 🫠
transcript from a Claude.ai session with Opus 4.6 Extended which includes:

"push the [training run] from Tuesday to Thursday. That gives your lungs 3 more days."

You’re staring at a breathless social media post (probably with a really cringe AI-generated image of a robot “writing software”) or Slack share talking about the latest AI-coding flavor of the week. You’re wondering “is this actually worth me checking out?” Here’s the heuristic I use... 🧵...
an extremely cringe genAI image of a robot "programming". It's got a nice cup of coffee on it's desk for some reason.

who hurt you?
A screenshot of a repo's AGENTS.md, which starts with

Guidelines for AI coding agents working in this Rust codebase.

RULE NUMBER 1: NO FILE DELETION
YOU ARE NEVER ALLOWED TO DELETE A FILE WITHOUT EXPRESS PERMISSION. Even a new file that you yourself created, such as a test code file. You have a horrible track record of deleting critically important files or otherwise throwing away tons of expensive work. As a result, you have permanently lost any and all rights to determine that a file or folder should be deleted.

YOU MUST ALWAYS ASK AND RECEIVE CLEAR, WRITTEN PERMISSION BEFORE EVER DELETING A FILE OR FOLDER OF ANY KIND.

Irreversible Git & Filesystem Actions — DO NOT EVER BREAK GLASS
Absolutely forbidden commands: git reset --hard, git clean -fd, rm -rf, or any command that can delete or overwrite code/data must never be run unless the user explicitly provides the exact command and states, in the same message, that they understand and want the irreversible consequences.
No guessing: If there is any uncertainty about what a command might delete or overwrite, stop immediately and ask the user for specific approval. "I think it's safe" is never acceptable.
Safer alternatives first:......

I continue to believe that context management is the #1 skill to develop if you want to get the most out of coding agents. But why? Modern models have a context limit of 200,000 tokens! That seems like a lot! There's a couple of reasons why... 🧵

Good example of why it's important to monitor your LLM-powered features in prod. Apparently some bug in Amazon's AI assistant where the product description isn't in it's prompt. Pre-production evals are super important, but wouldn't catch this. Monitoring some key metrics in prod would.

hotline bling meme.

Drake is very upset about an AGENTS.md file which include the instruction "when writing javascript, ALWAYS use `for…of`, NEVER `forEach(...)`"

Drake is very content with an AGENTS.md file that contains the instruction "ALWAYS run ./bin/precommit" along with an eslint.config.js file that includes the rule "no-array-for-each": "error"

This continues to shock and confuse me: the proportion of devs who are still not getting any active encouragement from their employers to start experimenting w. AI-assisted coding. Also goes to show how silly the "all devs will be replaced by AI in 2 years" claims are. /via @angiejones.tech

Very cool! FYI, I got an error in the sandbox when I clicked Generate Response. Do I need to add an API key somewhere, or something?

“Listen, I’m wondering if our engineers are doing enough with AI…” your CEO says, as the two of you sit down for your 1:1. Wouldn't it be great to have a true strategy in place for adopting AI-assisted coding? I've got you covered! blog.thepete.net/blog/2025/06...

It also (unintentionally) provides a great example of the risks of AI-generated code. Hand-rolled XML escaping code AND hand-rolled date parsing in a single commit! Wooooohoooo!!! 🤦

The platonic ideal of a Pacific Northwest spring weekend. Sucia Island!

When I write a big blog post I sometimes spend way too long trying to come up with a clever metaphorical cover image. For the last few days I've been stuck doing the opposite - trying to figure out what blog post I can write that could use this as a clever metaphorical cover image

what do I mean by transforming n*m to n+m? Rather than each tech stack's SDK having to build integrations for each feature flagging provider (n*m), each tech stack SDK just needs to integrate into OpenFeature (n), and each feature flagging provider does the same (m).

As a service to our industry, allow my to re-share this classic banger from @jahnnie.bsky.social x.com/jahnnie/stat...
"How most people draw branching diagrams": a standard-looking diagram of source control branches, with the branches running parallel to trunk

"How we should actually draw them to show divergence over time": a diagram where the branches are moving further apart from the others over time, reminiscent of those trace images from a particle accelerator

Today I selected the very BEST minutes in the day to go for a run 🥰
The tail end of a very pretty sunset. A harbor breakwater in the foreground, some San Juan islands behind (Orcas?), and the Olympic mountains just visible in the distanceSail boats happily tucked up in Bellingham marina at sunset.Marina boat launch. Yes, still at sunset.

I don't know of a better way to start the day. So neat that this is only 2 or 3 miles run from the center of SLC!
