Jeanne Holm was the first woman to be promoted to Brig Gen in the USAF. In the 1960s and 70s she was a strong advocate for opening more roles to women in the military, including pilot training and combat. She retired as a 2-star.

Ida Van Smith was an aviation pioneer who learned to fly at age 50 and founded more than 20 flight clubs for underprivileged children across the United States in the 1970s. Now her great granddaughter Toni Paylor is following in her footsteps by getting a degree in aviation engineering at UMd.

Ruth Elder carried private pilot certificate P675, and was known as the "Miss America of Aviation". In 1929, after the first All- Women Transcontinental Air Race, Ruth helped establish the Ninety-Nines as a Charter Member.

December 3, 1937, aviation pioneer Jackie Cochran made history by flying a Seversky SEV-S1 from Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, to Miami, Florida. She completed the flight in just 4 hours, 12 minutes, and 27.2 seconds, averaging an impressive speed of 278.13 miles per hour.
