Here's a good test case for our framework, demonstrating how a real incident can be turned into a false "rigged election" rumor or narrative. Here the DOJ highlights a case where a postal worker discarded mail that included ballots, and uses that to suggest voter fraud and untrustworthy elections.

Accurate naming of harmful systems is essential for moral clarity, which is essential for mobilization and reducing harm. But labeling individuals or whole movements with identity‑threatening moral categories often reduces the chance of change. Unfortunately. Human psychology sucks sometimes.

It's great that someone has passion and devotion to a cause. That doesn't automagically make their data or arguments perfect.

thenextvinnie.bsky.social @thenextvinnie.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Moral arguments aside, it's a 100% historical falsehood that withholding votes from the lesser evil will force the party to change. All it does is direct them to seek swing/moderate voters more. Black voters know this. All the flagbearers of the civil rights movements know this.

thenextvinnie.bsky.social @thenextvinnie.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Black voters, having been through more than 2 election cycles dealing with this, know how poorly it plays out in reality. I wish you've activists would do better to learn from civil rights flagbearers of the past.

Withholding a vote gives the less-aligned candidate a better chance of winning. There is no neutral ground on a FPTP election.

I feel like younger activists have a lot to learn from previous civil rights flagbearers

I think both are being misleading tbh. Cuban is technically right on the mechanics of taxes, but he is not addressing the larger point that tax code prioritizes capital over labor.

Yeah he's definitely out to lunch on this. The Report of the Presidential AIDS Commission, various books on political leadership, biographies... they're pretty consistent on this. It wasn't the most egregious mistake Reagan or any president has made, but it was certainly shlow/dissmissive/inadecuate

I am a software dev and had a client ask me to build one of these systems. I told him that he's really unlikely to end up with a product that sends emails a human would confuse with something with their time.

I was going to say I'm skeptical there are many AI tech elite that are keen on hiring humanities experts, but I feel like that would be a great change to see.

In tech I'm surrounded by hype masters proclaiming the imminent end of the profession itself, so it's not as if our very livelihoods aren't being assaulted. But the many benefits of AI tech are also undeniable.

Your article seems to be being savaged on Bluesky, but as a non-academic technologist, I find it quite reasonable. Maybe it's because AI already burned a giant path through my field, but I'm absolutely shocked at the way so many in humanities academia have almost wholesale refused to engage with AI

I had the mind/disposition for a profession that happened to make more money and be more resilient than average (well, that may be changing thanks to AI). I have worked hard, but luck got me paid more than other people who worked hard in professions suited to their minds/dispositions.

Wow. Proponents of the ICE taser gloves are openly saying that one reason they love the gloves is that they doesn’t leave any marks or proof that they were used, making it harder for people to sue when they’re shocked excessively.
Mother Jones

"In today's society, you know, everybody's filming everything, everybody has a cell phone," Glueck said. If an officer punches someone on camera, that can go viral in an instant; even a standard taser leaves puncture wounds. But "the glove is low optic, and it looks better on camera, and it looks better to those witnesses. With a glove, there are no burn marks or scars."But local police across the country are still eagerly buying the gloves—in large part so that they can harm people and avoid being sued for it. It's been successful "from the patrolmen to the jailers," Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said in a Compliant Technologies promotional video. "It's been a great tool as far as mitigating liability," according to Nelson County Jailer Justin Hall.
Bob Couey of the Floyd County Sheriff's Department sung the GLOVE's praises, too: "I highly recommend these gloves to anybody that's looking for a utility they can use that is conducive to not leading to lawsuits."

Ok, but let's ditch the LLMs for a minute, I'm not sure that distinction is critical to Dare's argument, that some kind of GenAI tech will most likely overcome many of the present day limitations that still require an expert to drive.
100
thenextvinnie.bsky.social @thenextvinnie.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
You think LLMs (or whatever they evolve into) will remain static for 15 years in "reasoning" capabilities? That's a pretty bold claim.
100
thenextvinnie.bsky.social @thenextvinnie.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
I dunno, how do you define "reasoning" such that it is outside of the realm of AI tech to mimic well enough?
