Today kicks off #TransHistoryWeek, a time for uplifting Trans, Non-Binary, Intersex & Gender-Diverse histories, celebrating Trans+ joy, and sharing stories too often untaught or lost! #WeHaveAlwaysBeenHere
A section of the Trans+ timeline, bordered by the trans flag, with text reading: “In celebration of #Trans+HistoryWeek we are sharing a handful of the many stories of Trans, Non Binary, Intersex and Gender-Diverse lives throughout global history, to spread Trans+ joy and help to tell some of the histories we were never taught…” and “Trans+ history starts, of course, at the beginning of time! We have always been here and it is important to remember that even though our stories are less well-recorded, that doesn’t mean they didn’t exist…”A section of the Trans+ timeline, bordered by the trans flag, with text reading: “2000+ Cent BC. In ancient Sumerian culture, priests devoted to Inanna (later Ishtar) included people who lived and expressed themselves outside binary gender roles. These worshippers, known as Gala, Assinnu, and Kurgarrû, were considered sacred, often adopting feminine names, dress, and behaviors to reflect Inanna's ability to transcend gender, frequently embodying both masculine and feminine traits. Some texts describe individuals who changed gender or embodied mixed traits, especially in sacred contexts. This shows that gender diversity has been recorded for over 4,000 years!” and “7th Cent AD: Across early Islamic societies, there are records of Mukhannathun—people assigned male at birth who expressed femininity or occupied gender-nonconforming roles, particularly in music and court life. While experiences and the degree of social inclusion that Mukhannathun experienced greatly varied across time and place, their existence reflects long-standing recognition of gender diversity in the region.”A section of the Trans+ timeline, bordered by the trans flag, with text reading: “15th-20th Cent AD: Among the Igbo people in Nigeria, there was a role known as a “female husband.” This was usually a woman who had gained wealth or status, or who didn’t have sons. She could take on social roles usually associated with men—like leading a household or continuing a family line, and in some cases, she could marry another woman. Any children in that family would belong to her family line, even if she wasn’t the biological parent. This practice was rooted in pre-colonial Nigerian history, and shows the fluidity of sex and gender roles that have been taken on throughout history.” and “18th-20th Cent AD: Among the Dagaaba people of West Africa, spiritual healers and diviners - often called to their roles by ancestral spirits - could embody blended masculine and feminine qualities to effectively mediate between the physical and spiritual worlds. These often-androgynous figures utilised this harmonised energy to access broader spiritual insights, enabling them to connect with ancestors of both genders for healing and community guidance. This is one of the many examples of spirituality embracing gender fluidity in the Trans+ timeline of human history!”A section of the Trans+ timeline, bordered by the trans flag, with text reading: “Pre-1st Cent BC - 21st Cent AD: The Māhū individuals of Hawaiʻi & Tahiti embody both masculine and feminine spirits. Historically revered as healers, teachers, and caretakers, they are known as "in the middle," and traditionally held high status, passing down cultural traditions like hula and chant. Although they faced suppression during the 19th-century colonial era, their role continues today with a strong resurgence in embracing the history of the Māhū, including efforts to restore their stories, such as the healing stones in Waikīkī.” and “Pre-1st Cent BC - 21st Cent AD: In Zapotec communities in Oaxaca, Mexico, Muxes are people assigned male at birth who take on roles associated with women or a distinct third gender. Muxes adopt feminine roles, clothing, and behaviors, often serving as caretakers, artisans, and community leaders. This identity dates back to pre-colonial times and documents a fluid, non-binary approach to gender within indigenous traditions. They are celebrated as an integral part of Zapotec life, often considered a blessing or good luck to their families.”
