Seeing this stupid take all over Bluesky yesterday and today. No-one EXPECTS the Republicans to be anything other than cartoonishly evil. The Democrats trade on being seen as better than that. In a duopoly, if THEY can't be decent, the politics well is poisoned for all.

Everyone who says handwriting is an outdated irrelevance hasn't had the sheer pleasure of holding this charming letter from Professor Tolkien to a friend of my grandmother's, explaining some printing issues which delayed the publication of the last volume of LOTR. Look at those elegant dots!

Oh my. Can you fly in it? I bought a pair of whole-calf handmade shoes just before Christmas for a sum of money I can't even admit to myself, IN THE WRONG SIZE. Maybe my feet will shrink in the wash. Perhaps I should cut my toes off to fit, like the Ugly Sisters. But they are gorgeous. 🥹

Dawn walk around the lake with Small, and this heron was so elegantly dressed in grey chiffon.

A small heron, or possibly quite far away.

A different, larger heron. Or possibly the same one, closer up, staring me right in the face and judging me, because I was not as well-dressed.

I mean, this heron was SWAG. Lovely blue-grey plumage and incredible drooping feathers.

It is so rare to see a star's full, shining beauty. Almost always, they are obscured by clouds, dimmed to oblivion by lesser lights; sometimes, our eyes are too frail to see them. But not one of those can fade the starlight itself. It will shine, brilliant and true, until we are ready to see it.

Aberglasney Gardens today. We were the first in: it was literally unlocked for us. I hadn't seen it for 15 years and the gardens were beautifully extended. And the friendliest robins ever!

A robin joined us for lunch. He rejected the marshmallow, but enjoyed some tuna mayonnaise on granary bread.

Last night's sky was a jeweller's velvet: deeply, perfectly black, in order to display the wonders of the firmament. I don't think I have ever seen it so soul-stillingly clear. In sharp contrast, the silly old Moon was farting about on her back, trying to shatter the awe with Falstaffian folderol.
