What Félix said. Also traditional software follows strict logical processes: identical inputs should yield identical results. I’m not an expert but my understanding is that LLMs are different. They may HAVE tried it in a sandbox first, but can’t always predict what it will do the next time they try.

I’d love to see a judge ask the lawyers whose civil rights were violated. (I assume the answer is Trump?)

“A Green spokeswoman insisted the party would protect Jewish members - and they would not be persecuted for attending synagogues which defined themselves as Zionist.” And yet an amendment to clarify that was voted down.

Christian Zionism is largely about accelerating the Second Coming where the Jews be either be converted to Christianity or killed. Which is pretty antisemitic.

“Some of this was driven by colonialism,” yes.

Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Heck, Noah Webster was trying to standardize American English spelling around this same time, too!

Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Some of this was driven by colonialism. But a lot was driven by desires of expanding nation states to increase literacy and improve intra-national communication. The idea that punctuated Modern Hebrew was particularly insidious (somehow more so than punctuated Arabic) is bananas.

Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The Turks and Vietnamese switched to Latin alphabets. Colloquial Chinese became the main written Chinese and started using punctuation, and China considered switching to a Latin alphabet. Esperanto was invented.

I think the author would say Yiddish is OK because it’s not claiming to be anything other than European. But the core criticism about Modern Hebrew is stupid. People everywhere in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were adapting written language to increase literacy and build bridges.

This is a helpful perspective:

But it’s anti-Israel extremism that made my Orthodox friends start wearing baseball caps on the subway, that made my (lefty) shul hire an armed guard, that led some of my former friends to spout vile antisemitism on social media. So I think it’s quite valid to criticize this plan for ignoring that.
120
Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I’ve debated with my friends whether this plan represents a good faith effort or not. I lean toward yes. I think the folks involved in its creation (including Mamdani) genuinely want to combat antisemitism, and thought it would hurt buy-in if they brought in Israel.
110
Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The plan doesn’t even define antisemitism. I understand the objection to IHRA. But suspect they also passed on the Jerusalem Declaration and Nexus definitions (lumping them with IHRA) because those definitions also try to draw a line where anti-Israel becomes anti-Jew.
120
Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I agree with you that orgs like ADL have made things worse by labeling too much anti-Israel advocacy as antisemitic. But this plan doesn’t distinguish antisemitism and antizionism. it goes out of its way to avoid touching the subject.
120
Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
In a city where the vast majority of antisemitism is intertwined with antizionism, I don’t see how you can have a “comprehensive” plan to combat antisemitism without mentioning Zionism once and mentioning Israel solely as a country of origin of Jews (just like Russia and Syria).

“Nearly half” say the economy is worse. So MORE than half DON’T think the economy is worse?? (Or maybe there’s a substantial “no opinion” contingent?)

With Mamdani, it’s particularly weird to see super intelligent people (like the OP here) suspend their critical thinking skills to heap praise on Mamdani for someone else’s work.
121
Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
When administrations change, people play loose with credit/blame. MAGA blames Biden for the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal (that Trump left for him). Mamdani fans credit Mamdani for work that was done before he was mayor (the DoorDash case, the Flatbush bus lane, trash containerization, etc.).
111
Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
So Biden is to blame for the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan?

Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

Criticism of Israel and support for Palestinian innocents certainly aren’t antisemitism. But Macklemore arguably forfeited the right to lead criticism of Israel (and to tell Jews in the audience “it’s not about you”) after his hook nosed Thrift Shop stunt some years back.

If you google “Waldorf toys” you’ll find websites that specialize in selling this stuff (lots of it quite lovely!), and essays about it like this link. These are cool ideas! I just have no idea if they work.

There is no such thing as a Waldorf toy
What is a Waldorf toy? A Waldorf toy is an open-ended toy that elicits imaginative free play. It's 10% toy and 90% child.
020
Micah @themicah.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
It sounds creepier than it is. The idea is that a face on a doll restricts the range of things the child can imagine for the doll. Same with toy cars, which in Waldorf classrooms are often a simple wood block with wheels so the maker doesn’t dictate for the kid whether it’s a sports car or truck.

They had some REALLY interesting ideas about stimulating and leaving space for imagination. And the space was beautiful and serene, the teachers warm. But it all felt too cult-like, totally uninterested in non-Waldorf pedagogical research. Also the vaccination rates were, um, lacking.

Sounds like Waldorf education. We considered a Waldorf preschool. No bright colors (crayons all pastel and no black until like 2nd grade I think?). No picture books (stories should be read aloud) and obviously no screens. No plastic toys (only natural materials—mostly wood). Dolls had no faces…

The landlords definitely voted Cuomo. But the first wave gentrifiers and neighborhood-scale activists (at least in my neighborhood) were split, and even the DSA people who claim to be pro-affordable housing are mostly anti-(private) development. Mamdani voters who favor upzoning exist but are rare.

He is a populist and his base is full of NIMBY/anti-development types. He will always choose populism over long-term planning. Like a rent freeze that is actively harming the viability of the entire rent stabilization system. No way he pushes through city-wide up-zoning.

Bitwarden is great for families. For $50/yr we have shared passwords and files with different permissions for different family members and emergency recovery ability for each other’s accounts. I consider it at least as important as our wills! Interface is annoying but the feature set is great.

One summer I worked in a midwestern office that was a block or two from the employee parking lot for the electric company. 90%+ of vehicles in that parking lot were gas guzzling full size pickups. Not used FOR work, just to GET TO work.
