My approach to Patrick Gunkel’s science of ideas divides his vision into 8 related elements. I’ve written about 4 in my newsletter. Today I updated my website to describe all elements. I hope this is a helpful way of approaching #ideonomy for future scholars (if there are any) ggrp.org/ideonomy.html

With ideonomy, Gunkel was alleging that the cognitive moves that seem so second-nature to us when we are doing intellectual work are in fact universal operations that reveal different properties of ideas within idea space…

In tomorrow’s newsletter I’ll be comparing #ideonomy with TRIZ, Altshuller’s theory of inventing problem solving. This is just one of dozens of important comparative analyses that are needed to put Gunkel’s work into conversation with existing and better known frameworks. ideachemistry.ggrp.org

An analysis of Marxism through the lens of #ideonomy would be fascinating. Ideonomy can probably explain why the “fatal contradiction” that Marx predicted would doom capitalism has failed to materialize. For example, Gunkel identifies contradictions as generative rather than fatal.

Edges are just as important as nodes. There is a vast graph of connected ideas waiting in the ideocosm for human beings to discover it. Patrick Gunkel was the first and hopefully not the last to get the clearest view of this structure #ideonomy

In #ideonomy, Patrick Gunkel made a distinction between “naturally clustering” ideas and ideas that have been artificially grouped. Overall it seems Gunkel believed that natural clusters hold the key to understanding a deeper and more fundamental order behind reality.

We’ve already invented time machines. They’re called clocks. If you want to find a way to visit the past or the future, it likely involves concepts we haven’t imagined and therefore words we haven’t coined. A science of ideas would try to systematically discover and name these concepts. #ideonomy

Scientists can accept the theoretical existence of infinite and imaginary numbers, and even infinites beyond infinity. Why is it so difficult to accept the theoretical existence of “all possible ideas.” Once you cross that bridge, #ideonomy becomes easy to understand, and inevitable.

"In Gunkel Space the logical hierarchical arborescence and diadichotomization of physical and mental reality is fundamentally beyond space and time--for it is the former that provide the latter their order, and not visa versa." - January 4, 1981 letter from Patrick Gunkel to physicist John Wheeler
