In Ethiopia, Kabite was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and his health declined and he could no longer work or care for his family. Through our partnership with @beonemedicines.bsky.social and and the BeOne Care Foundation, he gained access to treatment that changed everything.

Behind those numbers are families navigating the impact of cancer while continuing to create opportunities for their children. Nurul’s family is one example, whose eldest son needed a laptop for his computer science studies. We gifted him a retired work laptop, helping him continue his learning.

Max Schooling (known as Projek Sambung Sekolah in Malaysia) continues to help families affected by cancer protect something just as important: their children’s education. As of June 2026, the program has supported 584 students total since 2014.

👥 What does your work involve? I spend my time seeing patients, planning and reviewing radiotherapy treatments, participating in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings, teaching students and residents, conducting research, and managing emergency consultations.

📆 What challenges do your patients face? Many patients face delayed diagnosis, financial limitations, and long journeys to access specialized care. Alongside treatment, they must also cope with emotional stress and uncertainty.

🤝🏽 Why do you do this work? I chose oncology because it allows me to combine science with compassion. Supporting patients and families through one of the most difficult times in their lives is both a privilege and a responsibility.

As a nurse, Elizabeth knew what the image on the screen meant before anyone explained it. At 41 years old, this wife, mother of three, and healthcare professional at The Nairobi Hospital saw her chest X-ray and understood the situation. Further tests confirmed her worst fear: Stage 4 lung cancer.
