A very quick reminder for my local folks: The "Charlotte Way" is not actually a good way to govern. It sacrifices the voices and participation of the most marginalized in favor of creating even more space at the table for those who already have it all.

From Elevation's new university partner, their community covenant banning LGBTQ students. I continue to be saddened that Elevation's marketing (intentionally?) fools LGBTQ people into thinking the church is friendly, welcoming, or affirming.

Great article from Ryan Burge today. I'm certainly among the 66% entering ministry from a different career. I'm also comfortable with what's most likely in my future — bivocational ministry — something many others are doing, too. What's normative isn't always what's most visible!

From the article: "I told some friends where I was going, and half the people I told had no clue where on earth Armenia even was." Ask that same group of conservative Christians and you just *know* they have very specific opinions on trans people and drag queens, though.

When you hear the word “Baptist,” don’t think Southern Baptist Convention. Instead, think American Baptist Churches USA or Alliance of Baptists, which filed suit this week against immigration raids at houses of worship, similar to another case by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship earlier this year.

So, um, is there actually a way to link out on a TikTok? Doesn’t even seem I can include a link other than IG or YT on my profile. Anyways, my third experiment with a reel: Yes, liberal and progressive Christians do exist! I’m kinda digging this!

The Catholics and Anglicans/Episcopalians (à la magisterial Protestantism) are having a great Fourth of July dreaming up ways to undo the First Amendment. Important reminder: Christian nationalism is not within the exclusive purview of evangelicals and fundamentalists.

Finally found a simple floating frame I liked. Two years since I’d gotten these Bible leaves. From a 1615 King James printed in London. The passages are Acts 6-8:39 — Choosing of the first deacons, Stephen’s speech and execution, Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch, and more.

Finally got around to ordering @brandanrobertson.bsky.social new book. Looking forward to this fresh take that, from first appearances, moves us from a merely defensive stance to full reclamation, embrace, and celebration.

Regarding the Southern Baptists’ continued anti-LGBTQ hate this week: They may be large, but they represent only themselves. I and so many others are #NotThatKindofBaptist. Statement from the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (with which my church is affiliated)…

The modern Trumpist GOP has coarsened an already vile political discourse in this country, and, call me a prude or pollyannish if you want, I just don’t think Democrats should play into that same crude game.

May 20, 1775 — Residents in Charlotte Towne, North Carolina (or so eyewitness accounts and circumstantial evidence say), became the first to declare independence from Great Britain, producing the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence — hence the May 20th 1775 on North Carolina's flag.
Seal showing a man in late 18th century attire riding a horse with the words Mec Dec 250, Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, and the date 1775, with a portion of a waving North Carolina state flag in the background showing the date May 20th 1775.

A double anniversary commemorations today for Church and U.S. history geeks... May 20, 325 — Opening of the first worldwide (or ecumenical) Church council in Nicaea (in present-day Turkey), which produced the first version of the Church's first definitive confession of faith, the Nicene Creed.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]ª,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholicᵇ and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
ª "and the Son" used only in parts of the Western (Latin) Church
ᵇ universal

We pray for the continued efforts toward unity in the Church universal: The first person Pope Leo XIV greeted following his inaugural mass this morning was the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, followed by the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem.

You may see this in all the Francis convo. This comes from an otherwise good short book on Methodism. But this chart is wrong. Baptists, though informed by Anabaptists, actually branched from the Church of England and congregationalism. Anabaptists branched more from Zwingli, Calvinism, Lutheranism.

Just finished a first draft of a very short paper on Orthodox iconography, and I was struck by how appropriate this comment from St. John of Damascus is for this Holy Week and impending Good Friday.
“…I make an image of the God whom I see. I do not worship matter; I worship the Creator of matter who became matter for my sake, who willed to take his abode in matter; who worked out my salvation through matter.”

The T-shirt, this line of lyrics… are the most unintentionally gay thing I’ve seen in Country music in a long time.

Days after reading a bit from Albert J. Raboteau for class, my mind keeps coming back to this quote.
Screenshot of a text, with highlighted portion reading: "I realize now that all my life a community of love has surrounded me, even when I did not see it. How often we don't see the moments of love. The pain, the injustice, the abuse, and the evil — passing on generation after generation — blind us. But if we search, we can see that our compassion conveys God's love. It is through us, if we permit it, that God reaches out to heal our wounds. And it is through our love for one another that he transforms our sadness into joy."

Appreciated these words in a letter this week from the seminary's dean. If you or others need information regarding the legal rights of immigrants and counsel, you can use www.immigrationadvocates.org/legaldirecto... to find local resources.
I am reminded that the God of the biblical narrative is a migrant God. A God who migrated with Abram and Sari to a new land; a migrant God who liberated and accompanied the Israelites as they fled the Egyptian empire; a migrant God incarnate in a small child carried by his parents to a foreign country in order to escape and flee the political violence of a king.

As pilgrims and travelers on the journey of faith, we, as Christians, stand in solidarity with immigrant and migrant communities. We demonstrate love (one possible translation of agape is solidarity) through hospitality with our neighbors who have, and who have not yet, been able to obtain legal permission to justify their lives in the United States.

Like... Thomas Merton. I'd heard his name floated, but never directly engaged with his work. Despite what my fundamentalist upbringing taught me, and despite what mainstream evangelical culture insists, the Gospel aligned with social justice is holy and life-giving. (2/3)
Against the mass brutality of war and police oppression, solidarity with the victims of that oppression. Against the inhumanity of organized affluence, solidarity with those who are excluded from any participation in the benefits of almost unlimited plenty. Where "the world" means in fact "military power," "wealth," "greed," then the Christian remains against it. When the world means those who are concretely victims of these demonic abstractions (and even the rich and mighty are their victims too) then the Christian must be for it and in it and with it.

We’re in the midst of a big transformation of the church library. I’ve had so much fun assisting with the clean out! There’s a new kind of energy here, being complemented by our future-focused, church-wide strategic planning. We’re sowing now, with hopes for great fruit later!

But, here’s the thing: They did lose the liberal youth. A lot earlier than 2015. A far larger proportion of younger people than older people are non-religious. Not only did they lose the youth, their misogyny, homophobia, and culture war nonsense hurt all of Christianity.
Tweet from Neil Shenvi reading:

2015: "Evangelicals need to embrace the social justice left or we'll lose the youth!"

2025: "Evangelicals need to embrace the Dissident Right or we'll lose the youth!"

Same energy. Same error.

Absolutely bonkers as a whole, but this part right here takes the cake: simultaneously blaming the left (including many Christians too) for “negative world” and for Trump, when it is the Christian right that most strongly supports him. Why are we to blame for *your* moral failings and hypocrisy?
Screenshot of text that reads: It is a familiar theme: Things may be bad, but liberals started it. The election of Mr. Trump as president is only possible in “negative world,” Mr. Renn said. In “positive world,” an extramarital affair tanked Gary Hart’s presidential campaign. In “neutral world,” Bill Clinton was damaged by his infidelity but survived politically. In “negative world,” with the safeguards of “Christian moral norms” out the window, it was too late for liberals to make any coherent critique of Mr. Trump’s open licentiousness.

“The very people who were the most supportive of tearing down all the old moral standards and rules of fine society that they didn’t like are the ones who are most horrified by Donald Trump,” he said, with what looked like a flash of satisfaction. “You think you’re going to get a multi-culti paradise or something, and instead you get Donald Trump.”

Today is Ash Wednesday, and I penned today's first installment in the work church's daily Lenten devotional. Read the full devotional, along with today's scripture: mailchi.mp/ststephenumc...
Test reading: "Like the psalmist, we acknowledge today just how much we don’t know — how impossible it is to live up to the full standards God has set for us. We’re also reminded that God does not turn away from us, even in our biggest 'uh oh' moments. God will show us God’s presence, put new and right spirits within us, and restore to us the joy of God’s salvation."

CBF and my home church said: “Separation of church and state, y’all.” Found this posted outside my church this morning as result of this week’s court order. CBF is among one of few Baptist groups (primarily) in the South taking seriously our religious liberty principles.
Plastic sign posted on a brick wall, reading: “ATTENTION / St. John's Baptist Church / is part of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF). / Pursuant to a court order from the U.S. District Court of Maryland entered on February 24, 2025, Department of Homeland Security including ICE and CBP must treat our church as a "sensitive location" under the DHS Memorandum of October 27, 2021.”
