For residents, the questions are deeply personal: What did years of exposure mean for their families? How long was the contamination present? And why weren’t they warned sooner? The contaminated well has since been treated and the do-not-drink advisory lifted.

Andersen sits above Guam’s sole-source aquifer. Environmental regulators later identified the former military housing area as a “possible source of dieldrin in drinking water” and asked the military to investigate. The military maintains that no specific source has been identified.

In Yigo, Guam, residents were told not to drink their tap water after unsafe levels of dieldrin—a pesticide banned in the U.S. because of its toxicity—were detected in a community well. But the contamination had been on regulators’ radar for years.

For years, a banned pesticide sat in a Yigo drinking-water well. Residents weren't told to stop drinking it for more than 10 years. Federal officials flagged elevated dieldrin levels in Guam’s drinking water as early as 2012. Residents weren’t warned until 2025.

The consequences fall hardest on communities of color. In summer 2025, Black New Yorkers died from heat-related illness at 3x the rate of white New Yorkers. Latino residents died at 2x the rate.

Even when someone gets an A/C, the program doesn't pay the electricity bill to run it. This leaves many low-income New Yorkers choosing between cooling off and rising energy costs.

The Margin analyzed more than 60,000 NYC applications the city received for air conditioning assistance from 2024–2025 and found nearly 1 in 5 were denied because applicants lacked documentation or couldn't prove a qualifying medical condition.

The Margin @themarginus.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
One answer is buried in New York's cooling assistance program. We know that access to safe, reliable cooling helps people survive extreme heat. But New York's largest safety net for low-income residents facing energy insecurity wasn't designed around the reality of today's hotter summers.

The Margin @themarginus.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
About 500 New Yorkers die from heat every year. City officials call these deaths “entirely preventable.” If these deaths are preventable, why isn't cooling accessible to everyone who needs it?

Decades of Coal Ash: Living in the Shadow of Mill Creek

A 2024 rule finally required these old, often abandoned dump sites to be identified and addressed. Mill Creek alone likely has at least three of these sites, according to data analyzed by Earthjustice.

With Kentucky home to at least 87 coal ash sites and no independent state law, proposed federal changes could allow regulators to bypass cleanup protections entirely, leaving residents to challenge utilities site by site.
