thekolo35.bsky.social @thekolo35.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I feel like experience points for combat encounters fits this bill. In 2nd D&D having the classes progress at different rates helped to balance them. Rogues and Bards progressed quickly while Wizards didn't. But people ignored this concept so thoroughly that they did away with it in 3rd D&D. 110 0

thekolo35.bsky.social @thekolo35.bsky.social · 08/09/2026A long time ago West End Games proposed a game set in a low fantasy world where a D&D player's handbook fell from the sky and they thought it was a holy text from the gods so they are doing their best to convert their world into a fantasy setting. This made me think of that for some reason. 001 0

Not the comprehensive rules which are poorly organized and boarderline unreadable but a normal rule book that spells out the card types, turns, how to allocate damage, what the stack is and how it works. 100 0

thekolo35.bsky.social @thekolo35.bsky.social · 22/08/2026This goes back to what I was saying with a lot of games tend to not be very game master centric. Many games will just sort of dump a pile of things onto a game master and expect them to sort it out. More and more gets asked of a game master while players don't even buy/read the book half the time. 220 0

thekolo35.bsky.social @thekolo35.bsky.social · 27/05/2026The results from the training can be a very formalized process it is very much a process that is in the hands of the GM so the players can just kinda romp around and focus more on playing. You can still get the 12 upgrades and the multiclassing and the power scaling it just won't be player facing. 110 0
thekolo35.bsky.social @thekolo35.bsky.social · 27/05/2026And the reward schedule. Then for the player facing text it would be you start as a mage but later you meet a master who turns you into a kung-fu master, then later you learn the arts of the forest from a hermit. This way you can offload a lot of the hows and whys onto the gm. 110 0
thekolo35.bsky.social @thekolo35.bsky.social · 27/05/2026At a certain point, perhaps ask yourself, "Do I really want classes?". They might be helpful for a base starting point but if you are doing the tainer/trainee thing classes might just hold you back design space wise. You could put a lot of guidance in the gm section on training and rewards. 110 0
thekolo35.bsky.social @thekolo35.bsky.social · 26/05/2026When running class based systems I discourage multiclassing. Multiclassing always felt like a "pro gamer" move and not a character one. thekolo35.bsky.social @thekolo35.bsky.social · 26/05/2026Well you never specified how many levels are available in a standard game. I took the original question post to mean that a character earns 4 levels over the course of their career. These 4 levels would each be significant milestones. 110 0
